UPDATE: Thank you all for your help! The purchase has been approved and I will be getting a new 15″ MacBook Pro in the next few weeks.
Hi all, I work for the Salt Lake Valley Health Department and am in charge of our social media program. Recently we have been expanding our video production abilities but have hit a wall.
I am an Apple user (born and raised) so I have been using my personal computer ( with iMovie) to create our previous YouTube videos. The problem is that our videos are now becoming so large that it is eating up my hard drive space.
Have any of you successfully petitioned your department for an Apple Computer? If so, could you share your rationale and/or wisdom?
I’m putting together a document outlining the benefits and would love some help!

Thanks Jean-Paul. There are several factors at play here, namely:
1. Familiarity with Apple iMovie software (eliminating a learning curve and increasing productivity)
2. Superior video production abilities (definitely leaps and bounds ahead of any Windows program I’ve attempted to use)
3. Compatibility with local news stations (we’ve begun shooting “b-roll” of events for them to use)
4. Compatibility with designers we work with (who use Mac-based programs)

There’s a computing business conundrum that goes something like this “do you use the tool that you know best or do you use the tool that’s best for the job?” The answer to both may lead to a Mac purchasing decision. Schools and universities, at least in Utah, are heavily invested in Apple and new hires are more likely to be familiar with programs on that platform. If you’re in the business of producing public information materials, then you could make a good case that you could also do it better on a Mac. If you’re working with vendors using Macs, then you know how much of a pain is it to convert and dumb-down their a/v artwork to the PC.
Three-quarters of the developers in Utah, by my estimate, use Macs. One of the reasons is that they can run all software on a Mac using an emulator whereas a PC is limited to Windows-only programs. VMWare Fusion seems to be a favorite. If you can make a business case that you specifically need the functionalities of iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Logic Studio, Keynote, or another OS X program, then it seems reasonable for management to approve a sole source purchasing exception. Macs also play well with existing PC network infrastructures.
The popular misconception is that Macs are outrageously expensive. Perhaps Dells are cheaper at Best Buy, but governments don’t buy equipment at consumer discount outlets. They are usually locked into supplier contracts in which they buy at premium. The State of Utah, for example, paid an invoice of $2,300 to our supplier for my slow Dell laptop with a low-end 80GB hard drive. My guess is that the government rate with Apple for a more robust MacBook Pro is no more costly.
Other arguments that might be made in a personal decision for buying a Mac such as greater intuitiveness, greater security, and lower in-house support costs, might not sail with your IT establishment. However, I’d argue that IT job security is more threatened by cloud computing than by OS X.

Would you petetion to buy a dell over an HP? I didn’t think so. Buying a mac is buying a computer, you have to realize that you may have to read the manual if you need some basic IT technical support, but is that seriously that bad? Everything is easier to do, I wouldn’t pay for Mac IT support if I had a small business 10 computers.
I would put in the request to get the Mac and Final Cut pro or iMovie and if questioned about it provide some basic supporting details, like macs are the best platform for editing video, I can purchase a copy of VMware and Windows if necessary and run windows on the mac. You are just requesting the right tools to do you job, and part of that request is going to be to ask for more hard drives. Welcome to the wonderful world of editing video.
Our entire video department is Apple computers. They are the best tool to do the job. Our clients don’t want to settle for the second best solution, neither do yours. I would be hesitant to say that you will need no training for end user deployment, because you may want to get some training on editing, video encoding, broadcast design to name just a few. But no training for the Operating System makes complete sense.

Good stuff, am on that and thanks .. but there’s nothing similar for the federal “general” Mac user, or for the federal creative/design community, is there? (At least I haven’t found anything.) Hmm .. that’s giving me an idea .. 🙂

Thanks to the input from this group, I’ve got my new MacBook Pro.
It has already made things so much easier! Recently I put together a short video highlighting how we have used social media (specifically Facebook and Twitter) to communicate important information during the H1N1 public health emergency.
