Indeed. I think finding the right technology to suit a given organizaton is the best approach. I've had good luck using a variety of technologies - Alfresco, Confluence and SharePoint - to build intranets, portals, whatever you want to call them. Each has strength and weakness suited to different types of organizations and audiences. Wiki-centric portals like Confluence are great for organizations that have tech-savvy folks that think building content online is fun. Web 2.0 ECM tools like Alfresco works well for document-centric organizations that want to try social media. SharePoint, on the other hand, seems to check the boxes for organizations that want a Microsoft standard enviornment.
