Welcome back to the NFL Pool for the 2016-2017 season!
No buy-in, no pay-out, no money involved, just bragging rights for the week and a beautiful metal water bottle prize for most correct picks over the season. Drop me an e-mail to get the pool sheet, put an “X” to the team you think will win each game. Pick the total points scored in the MONDAY NIGHT game as a tie-break. Return your picks via e-mail. This e-mail method actually works better as I’ve found most folks need a reminder later in the week.
Your pick sheets need to be sent to me BEFORE kickoff of the first game that week (usually THURSDAY).
Do it early! And Good luck!

A new season starts with Tommy winning the week! Congratulations, Tommy for picking 13 winners in 16 games and claiming the prized extra point for victory!
The upset wins were the story as Tommy was the ONLY player to pick Buffalo. Only Tommy, Ian, and myself went with Miami over NE. Only Eddie, Ian, and Kat picked Atlanta. And only Kathy and Jimmy picked Tennessee.
The rundown: Tommy leads with 14 points, followed by Ian, Mark, Shawn, and Jimmy with 11, then Eddie and Mike with 10, Kathy, Colin, Greg, John, and Kat with 9, Rick with 8, Ed and Bill with 7, and Paul with 4.
Good luck to everyone for next week!
September 20, 2014 at 3:32 am #232646
Mike is the winner of this week’s pool with 11 points! Congrats, Mike!
Tough week for all of us with a bunch of mostly unforeseen upsets. Kudos to Mike for being the only one to take the Bolts over the Seahawks. Kudos to Bill for being the only one to take Chicago over San Francisco. And congrats to Ian and Kat for remaining faithful to the Pokes over the Titans. Buffalo, St.Louis, and Philly were also upset winners.
The breakdown was: Mike with 11 (including an extra point), Shawn with 9, Tommy, Colin, John, and Kat with 8, Ed, Kathy, and Bill with 7, and Eddie, Ian, Mark, Greg, Paul, Rick and Jimmy with 6.
In the early race for the cup Tommy leads with 22, Mike 21, and Shawn with 20.
Good luck to all next week!
September 23, 2014 at 7:05 pm #232829
Shawn is the winner of week 3 with 13/16 right and 14 points! Way to go, Shawn!
The breakdown: Shawn 14, Bill & Rick with 12, Mark & Mike 11, Colin, Paul, & John 10, Ed, Kathy, Eddie, Greg, & Jimmy 9, Ian & Kat with 8, Tommy 7.
Only Kathy, Bill, and Shawn went with Pittsburgh and Kansas City. Good calls, folks!
Mike has the early lead in the race for the cup with 31.
Congratulations also to two time season champ Ian for becoming a father last week! He and his wife now have a daughter to help him make his picks. Eddie, another of our players, has relocated to San Diego, CA and will be sending his picks over a longer distance.
If anyone has any life-changing news they would like shared to the group, let me know!
Thanks for playing and good luck next week!
September 30, 2014 at 3:48 am #233163
Congrats to John for winning this week’s pool with 9 points! And yes, that includes the bonus point. Upsets laid us all low this week. Only Tommy, Greg, John, and Jimmy picked the Giants over the Skins. Only Kathy, Bill, and Kat took Minnesota over Atlanta. Only 6 of us called Dallas and only 5 got San Francisco. NONE of us got Tampa over Pittsburgh… Ouch!
The rundown: John 9 (by tiebreak), Ed, Bill, Tommy, Colin, and Kat with 8, Kathy, Eddie, and Ian with 7, Mark, Shawn, and Mike 6, Paul with 5, and Rick and Jimmy 4. Tough week.
In the overall rankings for the cup, things have tightened. Mike still leads with 38, but Tommy has 37, John 36, Colin 35, Mark 34, and Kat 33. The rest have hope. It’s no runaway.
Good luck for next week and thanks for playing!
October 7, 2014 at 4:18 am #233607
Rick is the big winner this week out pacing everyone with 13 wins and 14 points! Congrats, Rick!
The rundown: Rick 14, Kathy, Ian, Bill, and Colin 12, Ed, Mark, Greg, Shawn, John, and Kat 11, Mike 10, Tommy and Jimmy 9, Eddie and Paul 8.
Special mentions to Eddie and John for picking Buffalo.
In the race for the cup, Mike still leads with 48 total points, Colin and John with 47, Bill and Tommy with 46. Five weeks and five different winners. Things are tightening up.
Good luck to all for week 6
And as always, thanks for playing!

This week, like the Carolina/Cincinnati game, WE HAVE A TIE! Both Colin and Kat got 12 wins and picked 42 points as the total score, so they will each get a bonus point for the week! Congrats, folks!
Also this week we welcome two new players, Mark H. and Jeff. Welcome aboard!
This week’s rundown: Colin and Kat with 13, Eddie and Shawn with 12, Ed and Mark D. with 11, Paul, Mike, John, Rick, and Jeff with 10, Ian, Bill, and Mark H. with 9, Kathy, Greg, and Jimmy with 8, and Tommy with 4. Congrats to Kat for being the only one with faith in the Cowboys. That paid off. A note on ties: I’m treating a tie as a result. To get a point, you have to specify a TIE on the sheet. Normally no one in their right mind would do this, so no points for anyone this week for the Panthers/Bengals game.
In the race for the cup Colin is the new leader with 60 points followed by Mike with 58, and John and Kat with 57. I will give a full report on the season standings come week 8. And the pool will continue thru the playoffs with increasing points for correct picks!
Get your picks in early if you can, and good luck!
October 21, 2014 at 4:01 am #234302
Bill is the big winner this week with 12 wins and 13 points! Way to go, Bill! You were the ONLY one to pick Jacksonville!
The rundown: Bill 13, Ed, Mark D, Colin, and Rick with 11, Eddie, Greg, Mike, and Kat with 10, Shawn and John with 9, Kathy, Tommy, Paul, and Mark H with 8, Ian with 7, and Jimmy and Jeff with 6.
Bill, Shawn and Kat got Kansas City and Tommy, Mark D, and John got Miami. No one picked St. Louis over Seattle and we all got New England and Dallas. Interesting week.
If you haven’t yet sent your picks in, and some sharpies all ready have, please get those in.
Next week, a detailed looked at the race for the cup, the rundown of the overall scores.
Good luck and thanks for playing!
October 29, 2014 at 4:15 am #234601
The winner of the 7 way tie goes to Shawn who was nearly dead on with his pick of 38 points! Congrats, Shawn, you are our first repeat weekly winner!
The rundown: Shawn 12, Mark D, Greg, Mike, Kat, and Rick 11, Tommy, Paul, John, and Jeff 10, Kathy, Ian, Jimmy, and Mark H 9, Ed and Bill 8, and Eddie 7. A pretty good week for all on average. Special kudos to Mike and Paul for picking Washington and Kathy and Bill for Pittsburgh.
As promised, the season standings: In the lead is Colin with 82 followed closely by Mike with 79, then Mark D and Kat with 78, Bill, John, and Rick 76, Shawn 74, Ed and Greg 72, Kathy, Eddie, and Ian 69, Tommy 68, Jimmy 62, Paul 61, and newcomers Mark H and Jeff with 26. The field is pretty much wide open as a lot can happen in the second half of the season and the playoffs.
As a reminder, playoff games will be 2 points each, the super bowl pick will be 3 points and the winner each week, usually decided by the tiebreaker (total score of the last game played that weekend) will get a bonus point.
As always, good luck, and thanks for playing!

November 18, 2014 at 4:52 am #235621
Colin wins by the tiebreak becoming our third double week winner! Congrats, Colin!
A crappy week for most of us though. No one picked Houston over Cleveland or St. Louis over Denver. Only Jeff got Tampa Bay over Washington (Way to go, Jeff!) and Eddie, Colin, Greg, and Jeff called Cincy over N’awlins. Way to go, guys!
Colin led with 10 points followed by Mike with 9, Ed, Tommy, Greg, Paul, Kat, and Rick with 8, Kathy, Eddie, Ian, Bill, Mark D, Shawn, John, Mark H, and Jeff with 7, and Jimmy with 5.
Looking at the leaders in the race for the cup, Colin is in the lead with 112, then Mark D with 107, Mike with 103, Kat and Rick at 102, Bill and John at 101, and Shawn at 100.
Several folks have sent in their picks all ready, and I thank you.
Remember there is a game on Thursday.
Good luck, and as always, thanks for playing!
November 25, 2014 at 6:37 am #236054
John is the winner of this week’s contest by coming closest to the combined score of tonight’s MNF game. Congrats, John! You and Greg had nearly PERFECT games, you missed the last game and Greg missed the first, but you both got all the rest right. Good week!
John won the week with 15 followed by Greg with 14, Ed, Eddie, Colin, Shawn, Kat, Rick, Mark H, and Jeff with 12, Ian, Mark D, and Mike with 11, Kathy, Bill, Paul, and Jimmy with 10, and Tommy with 8.
In the race for the cup, Colin leads with 124, followed by Mark D with 118, John at 116, Mike, Kat, and Rick at 114, and Shawn at 112.

Have a great and safe holiday, and , as always, good luck and thanks for playing!
December 9, 2014 at 5:34 am #236447
John becomes our first 4 time winner (including 3 weeks in a row!) Congrats, John!
Kudos to Tommy for being the only one to pick Carolina over New Orleans! We all lost out as no one picked Oakland.
John led with 14 points followed by Ed, Kathy, Ian, and Jimmy with 12, Paul and Mike with 11, Eddie, Mark D, and Colin 10, Bill, Greg, Kat, Rick, and Jeff 9, and Tommy, Shawn, and Mark H with 8.
In the race for the cup, Colin still leads with 144, but John now challenges with 143, then Mark D with 137, Mike 136, Rick 133, Ed and Shawn with 132, and Kat with 131.
Good luck to all and thanks for playing!
December 18, 2014 at 10:32 am #236832
Ian wins the week with 14 wins! Congrats, Ian!
Only 5 folks got Arizona, only 6 folks got the Jets, only 7 folks got Dallas and no one picked Buffalo.
Ian led with 15, followed by Colin with 13, Ed, Greg, Shawn, Mike, Rick, and Jimmy with 12, Kathy, Eddie, Bill, Mark D, and John with 11, Paul and Kat with 10, Mark H 9, Jeff 8, and Tommy 7.
In the race for the cup, the leaders crack a new ceiling with Colin leading with 157 followed by John with 154, Mark D and Mike 148, Rick 145, Ed and Shawn 144, Kat 141, and Ian and Greg at 140.
The first Word file I sent out didn’t break the games down as to dates and may give the mistaken impression that all the games were on Sunday. No! As you can see below there is a game on Thursday, two on Saturday, as well as most of the remaining on Sunday and the Monday night game, so please do get your picks in by Thursday. Some of you fine folks all ready have, and I thank you!
Good luck and thanks for playing!

John has won the weekly pool for an unprecedented FIFTH time this season!!!! Hats off to John!
In kudos for picking upsets: Jeff gets the high honors for being the only one to pick Cincy over Denver! Also Jeff joined Kat and John (big surprise) in getting the Giants over St. Louis. Only Bill and Greg picked Oakland over Buffalo and only Tommy, Greg, and John got Atlanta over New Orleans. Kudos also to Eddie, Mike, and John for Houston over Baltimore and lastly to Tommy and Paul for Washington over Philadelphia.
Lots of upsets and with teams holding back starters anticipating the playoffs, we can expect more this week. Good luck picking the right ones.
The rundown: John led with 12 followed by Kat with 11, Ian, Greg, Mike, Mark H, and Jeff with 10, Ed, Kathy, Eddie, Tommy, Mark D, Colin, Paul, Rick, and Jimmy with 9, and Bill and Shawn with 7.
The leaders in race for the cup are: Colin and John tied for the lead with 166, then Mike with 158, Mark D 157, Rick 154, Ed 153, Kat 152, Shawn 151, and Ian and Greg at 150.
Since the games start on Sunday, this will likely be my last reminder til the weekend, so please make your picks before the holiday takes over your thoughts. Remember if you see a reminder from me AFTER this message, it means I have not yet received your picks, so even if you have sent them, send them again. I don’t want to see anyone fall behind because of a bad mail connection.
Merry Christmas to all and have a safe and very happy holiday!
Good luck and thanks for playing!
December 29, 2014 at 12:56 am #237036
Kat wins the pool for the second time this season! Congrats, Kat!
Highlights: None of us picked Buffalo or the Jets. Carolina over Arizona was the biggest upset with only Eddie, Ian, John, and Rick picking it right.
The rundown: Kat led with 14, followed by John and Mark H with 12, Ed, Kathy, Ian, Mark D, Greg, Shawn, and Rick with 11, Eddie, Bill, and Colin with 10, Paul and Mike with 9, Jimmy and Jeff with 8, and Tommy with 6.
Since it’s the end of the regular season, the full report on the race for the cup has John leading with 178, Colin with 176, Mark D 168, Mike 167, Kat 166, Rick 165, Ed 164, Shawn 162, Ian, Greg 161, Eddie and Bill 156, Kathy 153, Jimmy 143, Tommy 142, Paul 141, Mark H 112, and Jeff 104.
Saturday starts the playoffs and the point value for each game rises to 2 points. Sadly though there are only 4 games this weekend, so the total score tiebreaker pick becomes very important. Give it some thought.
Picksheets are due by Saturday afternoon but New Year’s Eve parties are coming and the pool may slip your mind, so try to get them in early.
Happy New Year to all, good luck, and, as always, thanks for playing!

Well, finally! Ed is the winner of this week’s pool by picking all four teams correctly! Not only that, but I had 44 points as well! Should have bought a lottery ticket, I was on a roll!
I led with 9 points followed by Kathy, Ian, Bill, Tommy, Colin, Greg, Mike, John, Rick, and Mark H with 6, Mark D, Paul, Kat, and Jimmy with 4, Eddie, Shawn, and Jeff with 2.
The leaderboard race for the cup now stands with John leading with 184, Colin at 182, Ed and Mike 173, Mark D 172, Rick 171, and Kat 170. Keep at it, you never know how the upsets will turn out.
January 16, 2015 at 2:34 pm #237778
So, the Indy/Denver game was the big upset. Only one of us called it and got all four games right, and that was Tommy! Congratulations, Tommy for your second weekly victory!
The rundown: Tommy with 9 points followed by Eddie, Bill, Mark D, Colin, Greg, Shawn, Jimmy, and Jeff with 6, Ian, Paul, Kat, Rick, and Mark H with 4, and Ed, Kathy, Mike, and John with 2.
In the lead for the cup are Colin, back on top with 188, John 186, Mark D 178, Ed, Mike, and Rick 175, Kat 174, Greg 173, Ian 171, and Shawn 170.
For those can count the race is now between Colin and John. One of the topics to be discussed after the Superbowl is the point values for the playoff games. Right now Wildcard, Divisional, and Conference playoff games are two points each and the Superbowl is three, plus, of course, the extra point for each week’s winner. Next season should the point values increase with each playoff game to keep the later games more interesting? Or would this seem unfair to the leaders of the regular season? Think about that for the next couple of weeks and I’ll poll you all after Superbowl Sunday along with a seasonal wrapup.
January 18, 2015 at 11:48 pm #237830
Well, congrats go out to Bill and Colin for picking both winning teams correctly and coming closest to the total score. Since you picked the same score, you both get a bonus point!
Before I do the rundown, I will tell everyone that Colin is now UNCATCHABLE and has won the travel mug! Congrats, Colin! You join the exalted ranks of our past winners, who I will enumerate in two weeks with the superbowl results and a season summation.
What I would like you all to consider is further increasing the points for playoff games to make them more relevant next season. Say 2 pts for wildcard, 3 for division. 4 for conference and 5 for the superbowl with, of course, the bonus point for the weekly winner. Yes, no, or do you have another scheme you prefer? Please let me know.
The rundown: Bill and Colin 5, Ed, Kathy, Eddie, Greg, Kat, and Mark H 4, Ian, Tommy, Rick, and Jimmy 2, and let’s just say everyone else 0.
Cup standings: Colin 193, John 186, Ed 179, Mark D and Kat 178, Rick and Greg 177, Mike 175, Ian and Bill 173, Shawn 170, Eddie 168, Kathy 165, Tommy 159, Jimmy 155, Paul 149, Mark H 126, and Jeff 112.
The superbowl is in 2 weeks, lots of time, but try to get the picks in as the longer we have the more likely we are to forget. I had problems with e-mail from two folks; they sent, I didn’t get, but they responded to my nags and the second send worked. I didn’t ever get picks from one of you, so you forgot or maybe, I hope not, simply gave up. Hey, it’s only one more game. Might as well pick it to get the best score you can anyway.
Congrats again to Colin, and good luck to all with the superbowl.
February 2, 2015 at 12:48 am #238621
Well, THAT was an exciting and unexpected game! Pete Carroll is going to be haunted by that decision for a long time.
Shawn is our last weekly winner by getting the total score on the nose! Congrats, Shawn!
The weekly rundown: Shawn 4, Eddie, Ian, Mark D, Greg, Paul, Mike, Kat, Rick, Jimmy, Mark H, and Jeff 3, Ed, Kathy, Bill, Tommy, Colin, and John 0.
Final totals for the year: Colin, the winner, at 193, followed by John 186, Mark D and Kat 181, Greg and Rick 180, Ed 179, Mike 178, Ian and Shawn 174, Bill 173, Eddie 171, Kathy 165, Tommy 159, Jimmy 158, Paul 153, and our new comers who joined us in week 6, Mark H 129, and Jeff 115.
Weekly wins John leads with 5, Shawn and Colin with 3, Bill, Tommy, Mark D, and Kat with 2, Ed, Ian, Mike and Rick with 1 (there were two ties).
Colin joins the ranks of past pool winners: Ed (first year I ran it, I think I was the only one who played every week. Now I send nags.), Shawn, Mike, Rick, and Ian, who has won twice. Wow! I’ve been doing this for 7 years…
While I haven’t heard from all of you, all the replies concerning the playoff point changes have been unanimously in favor of raising the points each week. So starting next season Wild Card games will be 2 points, Divisional games 3, Conference 4, and the Superbowl 5. We’ll see how that works out.
I want to thank each and every one of you for playing each week. It makes the season more fun for me and I hope for you as well.
I sincerely hope you have a safe and wonderful off season and I’ll e-mail you all in August for the start of the 2015-2016 season!
