Is the center left?

With the election, America has moved away from the war-mongering military industrial complex spending taxpayer money on weapons.
But we are still exactly where we were before. Appropriations have been approved in the budget and we will build more, bigger, better bombs and weapons.
I believe we need to be safe. That means, in this world, soldiers, weapons and technology. God bless the men and women in service. However, lessons from past empires teach that extending too far into too many wars will bankrupt our country and may lead us all to ruin.
I believe the center has moved. America needs to invest more in America. That is a message we have received from this election. If America is healthy we will be able to help others. We will be able to show by example that the world can be a better place. And of course, then Americans can buy and sell more stuff from China. Until there are no resources left.
What will be left no matter what, are the citizens here in America. That’s us, that’s our children. Is this election a first step in the people realizing that there is power in unity? Power in hope? We will be left to pick up the pieces from the current administration, we are left to pick up the pieces of our broken soldiers from far-flung battlefields, we will be left with a planet where there is no “B” planet option.
What will be left is the truth. And that is where the truth always is: on the left.

I live in a Republican State with republican politicians, and supposedly republican majority, but I hear lots of veiws that are what the news media would call left. Why dont we start labeling it like it really is – RICH and POOR. And I’m not talking about the Rich who only have a million or so. And I’m not talking about the poorest homeless orphan.
The new POOR in this country are the myriads of people who dont have enough each month to keep a good roof overhead, feed. educate, and provide medical care for their families and participate in the American Dream.
No one around here wants to be associated with the Rich Corporate Superpowers and their minions who seem to believe that rights are something to be owned only by those who can afford it.
No-one here seems to claim they are Right Wingers anymore, except the gun-toters and they will vote left on anything but Guns. They are scared, and buying more guns and Ammo than ever. If the Rhetoric that I hear here on the street continues, this will be a Democratic State soon, People just giggle when some-one accuses them of being left-wing.
I haven’t heard anyone that lives in my town reject the idea of Universal Health Care except for the Insurance guy, but I see lots of glitzy ads on TV against it every day.

Every nation has problems.
One of ours is education. We are one of the most technically advanced nations on earth, yet in many places US children are being taught that men rode on dinosaurs like the Flintstones. They have so many wacky ideas drummed into them that they accept these as givens and no arguments now or in the future will sway them. Their stands on guns, gays, and Jesus are immutable.
I’m bi-polar on this. Some days I just feel old and tired. On others I get angry about it and want to start a revolution.
I have a good friend whose favorite politician is Sarah Palin. I refuse to discuss politics with him. I mean, what can I say? There’s not enough common ground to stand on.

I see there is some talk about putting “Blackwater” into Afganistan. I surely dont think we should be paying mercenaries. If we cant handle it we should get out and punish Identifiable targets with air power. I’m sick of all the war-profiteers.

Well, the last administration sure put these people in a bad light and set an adgenda for privatizing the Military. The Military does a remarkable and dangerous job, but when we use them there are some extra costs. The costs in lives; the cost in wounded and disabled; the cost of readjustments when they come home. We should be figuring out how to bring these people home. I dont like this widening of the war there. Nation Building is a bad idea. We need to re-build America.

Amen, brother Ed! I like to tease my Kansas-born husband about the no-evolution-in-schools thing (I’m an evolutionary biologist by education)….But when my older daughter started going to school, I was appalled. Thankfully we live in a place reasonable enough that there’s no Flintstones education, but even in general the school system sucks. I’ve said it before: MY child is being left behind. The current system is designed to provide dollars to schools that get the right numbers on test scores. So it’s all about the tests. And, it’s all about the kids at the lower end of the spectrum. The smart, gifted kids? “You’re passing, so what’s the problem?” Meanwhile I had a first grader who got detention routinely because she was bored off her cute little a**.
Every now and then I feel a touch of despair that things will never change, that the whack jobs like Glenn Beck and Rush will control everything forever. But mostly I weild my sword (Manjushri!!!) and am ready to fight for it. I dearly wish I could storm the Bastille, so to speak.

Such an eloquent message, Mark! I love it. Sadly, I am way too cynical to believe the center has moved in a meaningful way. During the election season, it did seem that more and more people were fed up — the economy was tanking, houses being foreclosed, jobs being lost. I was hopeful. But now we are right back where we were, only worse because the public dialogue has been completely taken over by Hannity, Rush, and Batsh*t Insane Glenn Beck. I know these people and their followers are the minority (dear god, I hope so!), but as long as these tactics are successful, our center will remain center-right. And frankly, what gets called liberal is soooooooo far to the right from where true liberals are.
Though I dearly hope for a Star Trek world someday, where we all live in peace and harmony (at least among our own species), I don’t believe it will really happen. Yet, I must fight each day as if it will. Otherwise, it’s a self-fulfilling prophesy.
