First day back from two weeks in Normandy, France. Had a blast staying at the Joy of Saint Benedict Abbey at full pension for $77 nightly. The nuns were nice and funny, the food fabulous, and the room was two twin beds, two chairs, a desk, a closet with drawers and a tiny bathroom. There are abbeys you can stay in all over France, Spain and…[Read more]

Got back this weekend from a last minute 7 day Bahamas cruise out of Baltimore on Royal Caribbean. We were looking for a weekend at the beach for our anniversary but waited too late to book. So in checking for a possible cruise, found this one for only $399 pp. Very relaxing week of reading our Kindles and lounging around. Never even got off the…[Read more]

Wonderful news, Henry! I know they can be pricey, but Uniworld and Viking offer really fantastic and romantic river cruises in France, Austria, and Germany. You cruise down rivers during the night and tour cities and castles by day, dining on shore as well as on the ship. http://uniworld.rivercruise.com/ or Viking River Cruises .

Now that it appears that my lovely wife can count herself amongst the cancer survivors, I want to start planning the vacation to Europe.
Because she is a 3rd Generation american with very deep roots in germany Am thinking about Southern Germany being the focal point of the 3 week vacation.
ANY ideas/suggestion/tips would be greatly appreciated! -

The tax free shopping in ST. Thomas is the big draw. ST. Lucia has a little railroad which is in itself a tour of the island. They should have the excursions coded with symbols denoting how strenuous they are and there should be one for accessible ones. Plan your hills, as my mom used to say. Make sure you can get refunds if you dad doesn’t feel…[Read more]

Ed – My father and I are sailing on the Carnival Valor out of San Juan on Dece. 15 with stops in St. Thomas, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and St. Martaan. We are arriving in to San Juan 1:00 pm the day before and staying at the Hotel Miramar. We are flying out at 5:00 pm the day the ship docks (7:00 am). I have tried to leave plenty of free…[Read more]

Sigh. My next cruise isn’t until March as we opted for a Florida trip featuring theme parks with friends instead. Had a really great time, but looking forward to cruising again. We are going to take the train from DC to Seattle for the Alaska cruise. Have a sleeping car booking for the two day leg from Chicago to Seattle. Amazed that it is still…[Read more]

Peter, Carnival has a solid product and I have to admit it is a group of small things that makes me prefer Royal Caribbean. They matter to me and may not to you or your dad. Food and entertainment are pretty much equal. I find Carnival ships narrower and darker than RC and somehow, cheaper. Which one offers the newer ship? That’s one thing to…[Read more]

Any thoughts on Carnival vs Royal Caribbean for a 7 night cruise out of San Juan? I will be traveling with my father who is 85 and generally uses a travel chair but can walk ok inside. RC leaves San Juan on Dec 14 ($729 for balcony) & stops at BVI, San Martine, Guadaloup & Barbados) Carnival leaves San Juan on Dec 15 ($569 for balcony) and does…[Read more]

@Henry, Disney, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean all have cruises sailing out of Galveston, which may be more convenient for you. Disney is designed for kids, Carnival is cheapest (the Walmart of cruising) and Royal Caribbean usually gets picked as the best “all round” cruise line, so the latter would be my choice. If the wife hasn’t cruised before,…[Read more]

Found them in “Lodging in France’s, Italy’s or Spain’s Monestarys”; three different books by Eileen Barish. There is a similar book regarding England’s monestarys by a different author. The websites have changed since she published so write for reservations. Regarding the food, they feed us Mousaka and Crème Carmel. I said “I thought we would…[Read more]
