Luma Institute — Teaching you to fish innovately

Innovation is challenging, but the Office of Personnel Management has been making some real progress.

A few weeks ago, we told you about what feds themselves think of government innovation — the Partnership for Public Service analysis of the federal viewpoint survey data. That data show that OPM has made great strides in making innovation part of the agency culture.

One of the ways they did that was by partnering with the Luma Institute. Abby Wilson heads up the government and civic projects at the Luma Institute.

She told Chris Dorobek on the DorobekINSIDER before you can learn how to innovate properly you have to define the buzz words, innovation and human centered design.

Luma’s Human Centered Design is focused in three key areas:

Looking: Observing human behavior. You need to know the roots, the desires and the context of the people for whom you are designing for. You need to think about what the user needs from you.

Understanding: Analyzing and extracting insights from the looking stage.

Making: Rapid prototyping, fail, fail forward and fail quickly.

Each of the three areas have 12 facilitation technologies that you can use to draw from to break the ice when you are starting innovation.
