I created a social networking site specifically for US Public Health Corps officers called USPHS World at http://www.usphsworld.org. PHS officers work in all of the HHS agencies plus several other federal departments to include DHS, DOD, EPA, NOAA, DOJ, and DOI. One of the biggest problems that the PHS Corps has is officers communicating with one another. Since our officers are spread out amongst so many different agencies, communicating with each other can be extremely difficult due to the fact that we are on so many different networks.
Last week I had the opportunity to brief this new initiative to members of the Commissioned Corps who work in the IT field. My plan is to get the support of this group with the hope that the Corps senior leadership would see the benefits of the site and endorse it. Overall, the reaction from the group was positive. Yes, there were some concerns about social networking (common issues with all social networking sites such as security, what gets posted, etc.) but the consensus from the group is that we should consider creating a site. Right now I’m tasked to draft a white paper on the use of Web 2.0 by the Corps. I was wondering if you had to do this for any of the sites you created in your department. If so I would love to get some ideas on what to cover on our white paper. Also, I see that Exchanges Connect site was created on the Ning platform. Did you have to get any special permissions from your department to do this since it is hosted offsite? Thanks.
