I wholeheartedly agree with you. But I think it is best to take as many paths as possible to get to our goal.
1. Distribution: of the Social Media Release type
2. Throwing the Party: hosting a blog and engaging with commenters.
3. Going to the Party: getting out there and finding key social media players in our realms to listen, chat and create community both in person and online.
The trouble we’re having is with implementing the third and most essential piece. This is a “what is PR” problem coming from high level fear of doing ourselves more harm than good by being informal. Perhaps by monitoring the blogs and presenting the data/information to the powers that be and providing rules of engagement for our New Media People we can get over that particular hump. I really don’t think it is any different than letting people leave the office at all. We are engaging our public, and listening which should be the role of Govt, no?
In any case, which free applications do you use for tracking the conversation? Do they help you to determine who the important players are and how much is being said? As you seem to know we’re trying to do this cheaply without paying for a service like Ciscion, which seemed to cover all the bases but I’m sure is out of our price range.
