Actually, it’s quite possible to get a federal job, but you usually have to tweak your resume some so that it translates into “gov-speak”. There are some resources on USA Jobs that will help you do that, as well as other resources throughout the internet. The only way that the system is biased away from civilians is that many civilians don’t take the time to put their application and resume into a federal job format. Don’t give up!

I got a federal job at the worst time possible in 1987, before most you were born. However at any time, it is good to network and get to know people, that is, managers or friends through the old “informational interview” of them. It is important to know what you are getting into, and really if the job plays to your strengths and aspirations.
Very true. Gov is a big machine and one needs to understand at least a few of its idiosyncrasies when writing up the resume. Good luck!
