This is topical- any child particularly those who are in the company of peers who have a cell phone merits training. I learned last month of 5 th grader with a ringtone generating expletives. A little irritating to be sure- however the administrators when they sequestered the phone they found that they needed it disabled by the student. In the…[Read more]

You have hit my pet peeve!!! I know amtrak gets a lot more of my business. Before TSA: Yes I have been pat down – by Isreali’s- they even went into my lipstick enroute and upon arrival. And I was part of an audit on Federal funds received by their government 2 years earlier. ( so I was feeling mite the injustice of it all then -but toughed it out…[Read more]

Having just finished the frustrating annoying task of dialoguing with the State of Virginia which placed a lien on my bank account for unpaid state taxes two years ago. I have not lived in Virginia for 10 years. Consequently the urgent communique dated in January 2010 -reached my domicile on april 10- 30 days beyond the due date of any action. The…[Read more]

C Porche replied to the topic Is age an issue in Federal employment? in the forum Career Advancement 10 years, 11 months ago
There are some places where some regard serious experience in one area as an asset in a different field. I think some places and positions value this more than others. It is really important to network to get the right feel to see how management embraces the value of a diversity of experiences and the concomitant training needed to optimize…[Read more]

@2rxkpksr6u4gqHi Mary
My first government job was in New York at GAO. I am glad that , I served under your leadership for a short while. Having enjoyed my classes with Barbara Jordon as that once in a lifetime experience in for six months, I am delighted to see her recognized. I hope I have the opportunity to connect with you again.Welcome,

There are a lot of good ideas here. I would add consider appropriate foundation garments if your apparel could be perceived as leaving less to the imagination. (Clingy and /or sheer is not desireable). Although I do not think one has to have dark suits, it is a pragmatic investment for your purpose. Classic lines provide more wear and can be more…[Read more]

Travelling to and from Bolivia and Ecuador for an Office of Inspector General review of counter narcotics programs implemented in the region has been without compare . I could narrow the scope to the use of the power point presentation as the instrument of the discussion; I also notice that some people employ the presentation as the handout and speak from it directly in my environment.

I recently took a course by Edward Tufte on Presenting Data and Information. He makes a strong case criticizing the use of powerpoint to convey analytical information. (I recommend the course.) Is it possible to move away from powerpoint dependency in our organizations?

I also was given no kudos for seeking public service from my peers as an undergraduate. Many of which started at salaries twice mine. I remember the sacrifice as a Federal employee when I was riffed for the good of the budget. Moreover, Federal human resources limited reemployment rights to an area I was not geographically located at the time,…[Read more]

In my office there are certainly opportunities for contractor employment. When a specific function or review needs to occurr and the process of bringing in staff for a targeted activity does not mesh with timeframes, we have seen contractors come in and cover the ground needed. In this capacity I have not felt that they were “ugly step children”.…[Read more]
