Does anyone know how to block the forward option on MS Outlook calendar invites? This has been a real problem for me when scheduling recent meetings that seem to be passed to so may people that meeting objectives can’t be met.

Candace Riddle started the topic PMP – Is It Worth It? in the forum Program and Project Management 7 years, 10 months ago

I was recently told by a recruiter that he couldn’t present me to the client as a candidate for a PM role without my PMP certification. Not only was this frustrating, it now poses a great question…is it worth it? I already have a Master of Arts in Diplomacy – International Trade & Commerce, and over 4 years of direct PM experience on an…[Read more]

Candace Riddle replied to the topic Bait and Hook – Fishing for an Interview in the forum Career Advancement 7 years, 10 months ago

Networking may help to get an interview (maybe)…though even that has proven tough lately. In my most recent experience I’ve got my resume “in the door” but probably winding up in a black hole, via networking. I have to go with H.C. on this though…nobody in management wants the stigma of hiring the wrong person on their back…so the resume…[Read more]

I actually have a friend who just went through 3 months of interviews with the same company. The last interview lasted 8 hours with a panel of executives. In the end, the recruiter asked him to email her a list of pros and cons between his current company and the company he was interviewing with. Why? It turns out that after 3 months of…[Read more]

Candace Riddle replied to the topic Leaning In – I Am Sheryl Sandberg in the forum Career Advancement 7 years, 10 months ago

Very true about those who tend to rise. I’m in my late 20’s and I’ve actually seen two other things happening:

    • People my age delay marriage and children indefinitely while waiting on the illusive “next big career move”; and
    • Those who chose to marry in their earlier 20’s are either living the separate lives from their spouse or are now divorced…

Candace Riddle replied to the topic Leaning In – I Am Sheryl Sandberg in the forum Career Advancement 7 years, 10 months ago

Both of these statements are pretty hard truths. I didn’t start telworking from home 100% of the time until my son was in first grade. I am the sole caregiver, but I built my work schedule around his school schedule. I too, would agree that it would be next to impossible to work from home with a toddler on the loose. My son was a toddler when…[Read more]

Thank you. All great suggestions. I’m glad I’m not the only one who seems to recognize this shift towards “cogs”. It is disappointing that so many organizations and recruiters are failing to see big potential right now. I don’t see this being as much of a problem for mid-career folks who have worked in a single area (e.g. I am a procurement…[Read more]

Candace Riddle replied to the topic What if we brought the top experts in HR to GovLoop? in the forum Human Resources 7 years, 10 months ago

I would get some of the top HR Managers from several agencies together with some of the department managers (e.g. Procurement, IT, etc) who are the ones putting out the reqs for the positions. I’ve heard numerous horror stories about the difficulties of trying to hire just the right person for the need, but having frustrations with the process…[Read more]

Personally, I think the improvements to USA Jobs are notable. That doesn’t mean that the backend is any better, but at least the user facing side has improved. As for Taleo – I’ve used this tool before when applying for private sector jobs. Again, the user facing side is “ok”…not great…but ok. But as you said, it isn’t designed to meet the…[Read more]

Ahhh the old bait and hook. There is more than enough advice about how to interview well, but how do you go about landing that first interview to begin with? Every agency or company seems to have miles of heavy seas that an applicant has to navigate before they are even invited for an interview.
In the past two weeks, I’ve applied to over 60…[Read more]

Candace Riddle replied to the topic Leaning In – I Am Sheryl Sandberg in the forum Career Advancement 7 years, 10 months ago

Andrew – That was not my statement. That was directly out of Sandbergs book. I don’t repeat it to paint all men in that light, but it does circle back to another point that Sandberg makes in her book….who a woman chooses to marry is the biggest career decision she will ever make. If you don’t have that partner, it makes chasing big career…[Read more]

Candace Riddle replied to the topic Leaning In – I Am Sheryl Sandberg in the forum Career Advancement 7 years, 10 months ago

The truth about being called bossy is very true. I actually just heard that from a man in the workplace about a woman on his team.
I believe it comes from both sides though for a woman. Men tend to view a woman in power as “bossy” etc….and perhaps out of jealousy or other reasons…women also judge other women in positions of leadership and…[Read more]

Dale – I agree and I believe that is what Sandberg argues as well. This is not a you or I problem…this is an us problem. I’ve talked to many men who experience the same anguish over deciding between work and family. I imagine, to some extent it is just as difficult for men to choose family, as it is for women to chose work (in terms of how…[Read more]

    Lean In
It is here! D-Day…or perhaps W-Day (Women’s Day). You may have heard the hype about Sheryl Sandberg’s book, “Lean In,” that was released today. Sandberg’s book has both sides (feminist and non-feminist) buzzing.
I’ve got to admit, when I heard about the book, I was a bit of a skeptic. From what I had been hearing in the media, Sandberg…[Read more]

A recent question from a public procurement professional:
During the evaluation process do you allow your evaluation committee members to take the proposals home with them, or away from the office to read, prior to getting the entire evaluation panel together to discuss? If so, 1) do you find that the members do the necessary ready prior to…[Read more]

I currently manage an international project and work with a team in the UK that I’ve NEVER met in person. We talk occasionally via Skype, but even then, it is without video most times. Thus far it seems to work (most of the time)…but there is A LOT to be said for face-to-face meetings (especially when you’re working with folks from another…[Read more]
