I currently manage an international project and work with a team in the UK that I’ve NEVER met in person. We talk occasionally via Skype, but even then, it is without video most times. Thus far it seems to work (most of the time)…but there is A LOT to be said for face-to-face meetings (especially when you’re working with folks from another culture/ country).
I will say, I’ve had the opportunity to meet my counterpart’s bosses on several occasions. Usually, the most meaningful outcomes from those meetings have been over dinner and drinks…and not over the conference room table.
So yes, I am all for travel and face-to-face meetings as long as they are productive. If you’re traveling without an agenda or real purpose…then it is a waste of time and money.
