TxDOT challenges app designers to create a My35 app
The Texas Department of Transportation is hosting a hackathon with the hopes of creating a My35 app that will help I-35 users gain access to real-time travel conditions via a mobile app. Hackers are asked to use the multiple datasets provided by TxDOT to create a mobile app that will produce real travel time savings for users.
Providing information such as road closures, traffic delays and incidents along I-35 in Texas will allow app users to minimize their travel times by adjusting their travel plans to avoid congested sections of the interstate, scheduled project lane closures, and potential inclement weather. Adjusting travel times can have a direct impact on congestion dissipation, fuel consumption/costs, air pollution, safety and time.
In the meantime, TxDOT is also exploring strategies to efficiently utilize the existing highway by working with local transit agencies, implementing improved traveler information systems and providing travel options for commuters and other peak-period travelers. The development of a mobile application that mirrors the My35 approach will enable commuters to not only plan their travel more effectively, but also provide portability in the face of an ever expanding mobile sector.
