What a PR campaign should do is highlight a sustained, ongoing effort to educate and inform. How many times can you hear a McGruff message before you start to tune him out?

Check out Boca Raton’s Boca VIPER page: http://www.bocaviper.com They are integrating social media not just with their public relations, but also with a broader crime prevention strategy. Just talked about it with Chief Dan Alexander this morning, he’s very accessible!
Portland PD in Oregon is also doing a lot with social media, they have not only their…[Read more]

Even just a training program in-house, something that agencies or departments within agencies can take and adapt to their needs. Make it less scary among the actual user population and then the demos may just take care of themselves.
This is on my mind because I just co-authored an article (due out in Police & Security News next month) about…[Read more]

The second-to-last paragraph in this post caught my eye:
http://sharein.com/shares/7072-louisgraycom-hi-facebook-its-me-friendfeed-this-relationship-its-complicatedWondered what your thoughts were about the implications for social media and government agency use thereof. Something to be concerned about (e.g. ad clutter), or not so much?
I have…[Read more]

I have heard from a couple of my sources that this stuff needs to be taught starting at the academy level, through field training, and continued through in-service training. Does anyone know of any police academies teaching social networking ethics?

Christa M. Miller replied to the topic Innovation vs. established process? in the forum Social Networking, Leadership and Innovation in the Applied Setting 11 years, 6 months ago
That’s interesting Andrea…. I have had the idea in my head to try to get LE agencies to use social media to reach out to communities for support in funding new initiatives, whether it’s applying for government grants or simply showcasing what agencies themselves are doing (or want to do), building relationships with business owners who in turn…[Read more]

Had a conversation today with someone who is intimately involved with both social media and government at all levels. At one point he brought up that even in progressive government departments, the desire to innovate still falls sway to old-fashioned procurement processes.
So when an agency (in my space, law enforcement) wants to start using more…[Read more]

Doesn’t it depend largely on the community? Twitter’s “rules” are different from LinkedIn’s. And not only are there commonly accepted blog “rules,” each blogger seems to have his/her own preferences, especially when it comes to commenting.
Very broadly, I think as in any group setting, the people who are there to learn and to help others seem to…[Read more]

I like where the group is going, I have been involved with moving so a bit distracted! 🙂
To answer 6/15’s question, I think I would be in my late 20’s, not too far off the age I am now (34) but I can be awfully naive and I have a lot more book sense than common or street sense! That’s a long way of saying I’m immature. LOL 😉

Just posted my first case study to Cops 2.0. I’m plugging it because I think Det. Carden over at Fairfield PD is doing something really unique with the department’s MySpace page, and I think it’s a program more agencies should pursue:

“We have gotten lazy and have programs that waste BILLION$. Let’s start by taking a serious look at where we can streamline programs, eliminate waste and completely cut stupid spending. And if we suggest that there is not BILLIONS of dollars of the latter, we are not being truthful.”
To do that you have to start with the people signing the…[Read more]

@pearlretrieverThanks Andrea! I did create Cops 2.0. My partner, Scott White, joined me not long ago; he focuses on technology, but as a sworn officer, brings a perspective that I just don’t have. Thanks for passing the word along!
I was fascinated by the details you provided and would love to hear more. I had read that JAG recently was re-funded…[Read more]
