I’m using data visualization software (Tableau, specifically) within a Federal agency to create cool new ways of presenting acquisition data. The dashboards I’ve created have gone over very well — we’ve gotten great feedback from across the agency, and there are already signs that the visualizations we’ve created are sparking change to improve…[Read more]

Daniel Honker started the topic Looking for a good model of metrics/analytics maturity in the forum Budget / Performance 7 years, 1 month ago
Does anyone have a good model for metrics/data maturity in organizations? I want to include a model in an upcoming deliverable that shows how an organization can progress from labor-intensive data gathering and analysis, to streamlined business intelligence and decision-making capability. Something like a continuum, similar the chart below, but…[Read more]

I’m not sure I would call these my “favorites”, but here are some that stick in my craw 🙂
“Best practice” — Can we really know that something is a BEST practice? This seems to hearken back to the days of Taylorism and time and motion studies, when managers would look for the “one best way” to accomplish a task (usually in manual labor). How…[Read more] -

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Faye, Josh, and Alycia. It seems like limiting the number of custom questions to a minimum and making them optional is a safe route.

Thanks, Faye. A whole year for a 5-question survey– Yikes!

I’m building an Ideascale site for my government client, and I’m curious what others experiences have been with these ideation tools and the PRA.
The social media guidance the administration put out in 2010 (from my reading) is clear that these types of discussion tools–as long as they’re not a survey–do *not* trigger PRA. However, I did read…[Read more] -

Thanks, Christopher. A DMV is definitely a gov office that could use a social media presence — not only because it’s one of the more public-facing gov services, but also because social media can often be a good platform for gov showing its sense of humor.

Right on, Dannielle. That’s the larger process I’m thinking about right now, in addition to the strategy document itself too. Luckily, the buy-in is already pretty high within the organization.

I’m authoring a social media strategy for my project. I’ve been closely involved in social media efforts in the past, and I’m very familiar with the flow and contents of strategy documents in general (goals–>objectives–>tools–>metrics, etc.), but I haven’t written a social media strategy before. If anyone has a strategy on paper they can share,…[Read more]

Daniel Honker replied to the topic Is Open Government’s Death Imminent? in the forum Technology 9 years, 8 months ago
There seems to be a common thread here that the opengov movement is a network, not a hierarchy with a head. Thus, Kundra’s resignation doesn’t necessarily mean all that much. I’d agree — opengov is essentially about changing the way government works, and this change is most profound at the cultural level. So it depends on managers‘ adoption of…[Read more]

Daniel Honker started the topic ReDrawCA – participatory redistricting effort launches in CA in the forum Forum Discussions 9 years, 8 months ago
I saw this article on Good this morning about an effort to inject public participation into the redistricting process in CA:
ReDrawCA Lets Citizens Draw Their Own New Districts
The effort is centered on enabling people to identify their “communities of interest” — groups that share similar concerns — and have those considered in redrawing…[Read more]

I’m about to start a new post on this, but I’ll also mention it here: http://www.good.is/post/redrawca-lets-citizens-draw-new-representative-districts-that-are-actually-representative/
A new project, ReDrawCA, gives the power back to the people by letting citizens all over the state redraw their ideal representative districts and submit them to…

Huge story. And I agree with Ken that the gov’s website makes it sound more like a public comment period than a collaborative drafting/editing process. It also seems like the constitution is pretty well baked by their Council at this point, which limits the public’s impact. Nonetheless, allowing this degree of public participation in the process…[Read more]

The Eagles have some good tunes: “The Last Resort,” and several off their newest album: “No More Walks in the Woods” (impeccable harmonies), “It’s your World Now”
Likewise, Don Henley’s penned a number of them: “Goodbye to a River”
I’ve found it tough to find good enviro songs that aren’t too depressing… -
