Doug Taylor replied to the topic Who was your favorite boss? Why? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 5 years, 7 months ago
My favorite boss and mentor was a gentleman named Bill Hankins. Bill helped my career tremendously in the 1970s through his wise counsel, and by encouraging me to go back to college, and learn all about computers. He taught me what public service was, and how to perform it well. He allowed me to grow and he was always there for me. I’ll never…[Read more]

Doug Taylor replied to the topic Should Wifi Be Free Everywhere (and Should Government Pay For It?) in the forum Miscellaneous 6 years, 6 months ago
1 – Does your local government pay for wifi access?
In one park adjacent to City Hall. The City subsidizes the library and public schools which provide free Internet access and computers.
2 – Should they?
Perhaps, in public parks and recreational facilities, but with time and bandwidth limitations.
3 – What alternatives would you…[Read more] -

Great presentations by all! I really enjoyed the session even though I listened and watched late this evening. I tweeted that in Alabama we can get our fishing license via telephone. I bought a salt water license last year on the Gulf Shores State Park Pier. Virtual Alabama is a great program, and I sincerely hope it continues to grow.

As I mentioned in my original post, we use Twitter management tools. We attended a webinar done by the City of San Francisco, in which they told everyone about important tools…[Read more]

I agree we have a web committee made up of members from all departments. It was formed to develop requirements for a redesigned website. The Committee made a formal recommendation to the Mayor a couple of weeks ago, and it appears that the recommendations will be implemented in the next fiscal year.

The City of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, uses YouTube, Twitter (3 accounts), and Facebook. We use it to reach our citizens and residents in the region. Tuscaloosa is the home of the University of Alabama and we have an event-driven economy. It is possible during some home football games for our population of over 90,000 to more than double. We need ways…[Read more]

Kim – The City of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, uses Twitter in 3-1-1. About a year ago, we attended a webinar hosted by Gartner that featured the City of San Francisco’s use of Twitter. There are management tools that should be used with Twitter if it is to be used effectively. Although I’m not directly involved in day-to-day operations, I’m sure that…[Read more]
