Success in a CoP includes a growing community where members have had a chance to know something about each other, what they have in common and how to pursue identified goals of the group. In one CoP that I am secretary for we develop annual goals that include building demonstrations that will move our field of interest forward. We cooperate with various Gov agencies using their data, for example.
We have a free day-long, annual workshop in the DC area with great speakers and 70-110 attendees.
We have monthly telecons to conduct CoP business keep abreast of important group issues, how to solve relevant problems and what is going on in the relevant standards groups.
We got together to write an NSF grant and were successful on our 2nd try so we actually have some funds to help with the CoP’s interests and now help manage a project.
