Very interesting topic. There’s definitely a pull factor on those left behind when long-time empoyees start retiring. Part of the problem, though, is that that clique of veterans perhaps hasn’t had “the time nor inclination” to get to know the new employees either. I’ve been on both sides of that equation, and you’ll always see both sides looking askance at each other, one side fearful of change, the other leery of hearing how “we’ve always done it this way” again. Both sides have a lot to learn from each other. Maybe when someone new moves into the neighborhood you should be at their desk or door with a plate of brownies, not with an eye toward retirement. When I was a newbie in government, I sure could have used a few more mentors with only a year or two to go. Those folks are the ones with the deep roots. Maybe they could help some seedlings out. I imagine if an old pro had an audience of young mentees, he or she might want to stick around a bit longer.
