i agree, except i think it needs to be paired with a really top notch awareness campaign. in the grand scheme of things, most people don’t even know these dialogs are happening.
it will also be interesting to see how we collectively become more experienced in carrying out these conversations. right now there’s a lot of us-versus-them, you “should” do this (coming from both sides), and probably a lot of pent up frustration on all sides. we (government) also need to figure out not just how to solicit input or open the conversation, but how to effectively incorporate that process into the actual business of running governments. how to be agile enough to incorporate good suggestions for change? how to balance getting input with implementing? etc.
i hope all those things will shape the future of these dialogs, too! but i’m not sure how to best create a community of practice there. http://wiki.openmuni.org/ seems to be doing neat stuff WRT municipal-level conversations…
