Diversity isn’t just about skin color, race, or ethnicity: it also encompasses culture, age, gender, religion, and disability. What’s sad is that in 2010, “diversity” still conjures up “affirmative action” or “minorities.” Furthermoe, diversity still carries a negative connotation for too many people. As I tell the students in my American Diversity class, “diversity” means different. Not good, not bad, not better than, not less than–just different. When we divorce the word from its usual contexts, I think most people would agree that having a variety of people in our workplaces is a benefit, not a drawback.
