The military as a whole is ramping up to really tackle this. The Army recently passed an OPORD to free up access to social media sites (sans YouTube, which still is blocked…a pity). The other branches are also progressing toward establishing doctrine and policy.
Strategic intent at the highest levels exists for widespread use of social media. From President Obama, to the secretary of defense, to the service secretaries, chiefs of staff, on down to most flag officers…social media is where the military must operate in order to maintain its conversation with the American people.
Despite that, it’s still incredibly difficult to progress. The managers and officers below the senior leadership put up constant obstacles (as do most middle and quasi upper managers in most corporations).
So the struggle continues…
