I really hope we’re not at this stage yet! I’d like to think I know my colleagues and am professional enough to know what’s appropriate and isn’t. An auto correct for my spelling and grammar – that’s fine. One for my emotions? No way!!!

Oddly enough – I had to make a case the other way. When the Coalition came to power in the UK there was a moratorium on UK Government printing. This wasn’t so difficult with things like annual reports and we made the transition quite easily. We did have a legislative requirement to remind people of things like breast cancer testing and this was,…[Read more]

Justin Kerr-Stevens replied to the topic What’s your #1 Powerpoint tip? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 11 months ago
I have to say… it doesn’t always work. There is an occasional ‘bunny in the head lights’ look when I finish… which is the point they realise I’m not there just to talk at them! 😉

I always try and abide by the 10:20:30 rule. 10 Slides, 20 point font, talk for no longer than 30 Minutes.

Good point – am pretty certain civil service guidance precludes this from happening in the UK.

This came up in the UK a while ago. Steph Gray ran a survey in the UK. Really interesting results: http://www.helpfultechnology.com/helpful-blog/2009/01/update-who-blocks/
Maybe we could do something similar? Make an interesting white paper! -

On a personal level I think there is something about respecting the individual, who has a right to be able to say what they think, but also the aspirations and the integrity of any debate itself.
In a professional context, if I’m moderating or managing a community debate I normally ensure the terms of participation are pretty clear from the…[Read more]

Justin Kerr-Stevens replied to the topic Is the “Like” Button a Substitute for a Comment? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 8 years, 12 months ago
I had completely forgotten about the Orwell quote. Really does give food for thought.
I have some reservations about using the ‘like’ button but more from the perspective of the data I share with facebook. It just feels like another way a network can see what I’m doing and ‘tailor’ content for me.
I do think the ‘Like’ button (and yes the…[Read more]

Edison’s quote about trying to accomplish things has always been one of my favourites. For me it highlights the problems that can occur when rules, guidelines and parameters are applied to something as fluid as engaging online.
One of the things I find people ask for most when devising a ‘social strategy’ are previous examples of guidance, policy…[Read more] -

I’m an associate with the Think Tank Demos in the UK. Believe it or not, the contact was originally initiated through Twitter.
I agree with Steve, it does help if you have a thesis or degree that is related to an area the Think Tank covers – but networking can get a foot in the door as well! -

Thanks for the h/t Steve. We’re still very much tinkering but hopefully this gives people an idea of what we’re up to. All suggestions and ideas welcome!

Justin Kerr-Stevens replied to the topic Do you have a Social Media Policy? Do you need one? in the forum Forum Discussions 12 years, 2 months ago
Hi Lovisa,
The UK Government recently released some guidance for participation online. It’s available here: http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/iam/codes/social_media/participation.asp
I’ve also developed similar guidance for a number of other organisations. As Emi says – treat people as adults and they normally behave that way.
I have some contacts…[Read more]
