Keena Cauthen replied to the topic The Role of Leadership in Times of Crisis in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 8 years, 1 month ago

I agree with this, whole heartedly. In Israel where teachers and staff are often armed, school shootings have resulted in something like 30 deaths in the last 10 years, while in America it is more like >300 in that same timeframe. Add to that, in Israel, where there is a preponderance of weapons in mainstream society, mass rampage killings like…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic Is the morale problem at agencies anything new? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 8 years, 1 month ago

I can tell you in my personal experience, morale is going down in my office. I work for one of those listed in the article, one of the large agencies, ranked at the low end, and have to agree that in my 10 years with this agency there has been a steady decline in morale. I whole heartedly support the reason for my job… I believe that it is a…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic What Kind of Coffee Do You Order? in the forum Miscellaneous 8 years, 2 months ago

A galone has about 1-1/2 shots of expresso (at least where I watched them make it)… it is served in a tall thin glass, they steam the milk, put about 1/4-1/2″ of froth on the top, and then pour the expresso in it. Stir in about 1-2 packs of raw sugar then top with cool whip, and cinnamon. Since I like my coffee with a lot of milk and sugar,…[Read more]

I prefer to order a Galone… throwback to my time in the Azores (Portuguese islands). Irks me that folks think it’s the same as a Capachino… similar but not the same folks! The devils in the details, as they say. I keep an expresso maker at home so I can make these tasty treats. But if I order out, I do a French Vanilla Capachino, tall, with a…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic Should Email be banned at work? in the forum Technology 8 years, 9 months ago

People need to be taught how to use e-mail, so that it is not the primary means of communication but carries important information needed long term (however long that length is). I use person-to-person contact a majority of the time, but if I need to get the same information to a group of folks and it’s a limited amount of straight-forward info,…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic Name your acronym or word? – Stuff Bureaucrats Say – in the forum Miscellaneous 8 years, 9 months ago

My favorite acronyms lately are CRDP and CRSC… why? Because I hear folks actually making words out of them, instead of just calling it C.R.D.P. they say curdep and instead of C.R.S.C they say cursek. Mind you, those of us in the trenches working day in and day out with these, as well as basic MRP, just use the initials, so you can easily tell…[Read more]

“Look, if the claimant went back to work then she may qualify for a new BYB, but at a lower WBA. The 607B indicator can’t be changed except by the central office which might choose to give her the BY option. IBIS won’t let you change that even if you’re an FOS.”

Great job Christopher Whitaker! I love it!. I just have to say that this reminds me…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic OPM Ends Their ROWE Pilot in the forum Human Resources 8 years, 10 months ago

In our organization the ROWE concept, which isn’t called that at all but evidently falls under it according to my research, works fairly well. Employees are expected to produce so many widgets per day and are held accountable (as much as any government employee is really) for that standard, as well as a quality standard on their product.…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic Calling in sick in the forum Human Resources 8 years, 11 months ago

We have two options. Option 1, you call your supervisor or one of the other supervisors in the building. While I was a supervisor, I gave my home phone as well as the work #, since I was one of those who comes in later than others but am up early with kiddos. Those supervisors who don’t want to give out a personal number do not have to, as long…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic What are some great ways to recognize team members for accomplishments? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 8 years, 11 months ago

I did two things on my team… first, I bought some “You Make a Difference” coins and put them on the team in a bowl. These were available for anyone to give to another team member who they felt had made a difference to them, either by helping, training, or even just listening — did not have to be directly related to work, as we all know how…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic Blackouts & SOPA – What do you think? in the forum Technology 8 years, 12 months ago

With so many knowledgable folks out here weighing in… my non-techie self has one question… If my son is dancing to a song on one of his favorite tv shows, and he’s so cute that I record it… then I post it on my Facebook page for my mom and family/friends who are all over the world to get to see, in my understanding this is infringement and…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic WARNING CONTROVERSY AHEAD: Your Thoughts on the Marine Video in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 9 years ago

I’m a military wife. My husband has retired from the military after 20 years… my perspective is that this is not anything unusual or unique to this war. I’m sure that every battle that has ever been faught has had someone do something irresponsible, or questionable, or down-right wrong. The difference is that technology at this time allows…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic What Do You Think: Do New SES Performance Metrics Make Sense? in the forum Human Resources 9 years ago

In the branch that I work in, I don’t see that this is going to make a difference, mainly because for the last 6 years at least (since that’s all I’ve actually worked in this branch) this is how our Leaders have been evaluated, and how we as their employees have been evaluated. We are very results driven, and our performance (individual and as a…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic What’s the Most Irritating Facebook Post You’ve Seen in the Last 24 Hours? in the forum Miscellaneous 9 years ago

It’s for Cancer Awareness… like previous years when it was the color of the bra (though only colors were being posted) or the size of your shoe… You get a private message with the key or code, and then using it, post your response. The color of the bra got national attention… trying for a repeat.

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic What Was Your First Car? in the forum Miscellaneous 9 years ago

I drove the family station wagon, but the first vehicle considered “mine” was the old blue van, a Ford Van, 197xish, government sale item. The mobile crime unit in KS upgraded, spray-painted over their emblems and sold the used vehicles… and my dad bought me the van. Stick, standard H on the column, two passenger in front, mobile crime unit…[Read more]

Keena Cauthen replied to the topic What If NTSB Gets a Ban on Cell Phones for Drivers? in the forum Mobility for Government 9 years, 1 month ago

Another reason to wonder why the Federal Government needs to get involved… what is needed in a metropolis like DC or New York, is not as critical in someplace like where I grew, Chamberlain, SD. We thought we had rush hour if we saw 3-4 cars back-to-back on any single road and it wasn’t a parade. If driving while talking on a phone is so…[Read more]

I agree with Pattie… if you want to ban distractions, get rid of the passengers. My children are more of a hazard than my phone, because I do use the hands-free device and am able to keep my hands on the steering wheel and my eyes forward when using it. However, when my children were little and dropped a pacifier, or a bottle, or a toy, I’d…[Read more]
