Hi, Tom. Thanks for your post – this is the first I’ve heard of Facebook doing this. It could potentially affect many local governments. I posted on the http://www.facebook.com/government page for clarification, but they likely don’t monitor it. I’ll try a FB contact.

The fact that you were blocked from administrator rights is most concerning to…[Read more]

Absolutely a must have. Reno.gov mobile traffic is averaging 14% (always increasing). During recent major fire when 10,000 residents were evacuated, mobile traffic jumped to 22%. They were still able to access our emergency messages during a critical situation.

Famous last words before the judge at a first amendment violation hearing, “It was just a pilot program, so we’re not really in trouble, right?” =)

I’ve been working on a video exploring both sides of the issue since I saw that article =) Of course it will have a humorous/satirical spin, but I’ll incorporate some of the ideas I read here! Thanks for talking about this issue.

Kristy Dalton replied to the topic Sunday Night Cynic: What Government is Worse Off? in the forum Acquisition, Contracting, Procurement 9 years, 7 months ago

Local government is worse off, especially if a non home-rule entity. The state legislature decides on consolidated tax distribution. Municipalities exist at the will of the state, and at any time the state can mandate that cities must take on services that were handled at the state level. In tough economic times, it happens more often.

Kristy Dalton replied to the topic How to recruit and retain young people in government? in the forum Human Resources 9 years, 7 months ago

My advice on retaining young government staff is to focus on professional development and training opportunities. You can’t offer newbies top dollar, but the personal benefits realized through learning new technical and professional skills on the job are important. I always felt a stronger loyalty to my government employers who invested in…[Read more]

Kristy Dalton replied to the topic You Take A Smoke Break. I Should Get a Walk Break. in the forum Forum Discussions 9 years, 8 months ago

@Ben, The difference is that we make accommodations for those with disabilities because most people with disabilities don’t have the ability to make a choice to change and walk correctly or get their sight back, or whatever the case may be. Smokers have a choice and medical resources out there to help them quit. They weren’t born smokers, they…[Read more]

This one’s a tough one. The app looks neat, as I said in my tweet (I don’t have an iPhone to test it though). But I would like it better if it were an app developed by someone outside government, using a public SSA dataset. It’s just that we get so much flak here in local government if we allocate time and resources to projects that citizens don’t…[Read more]
