Hi, I just read this and had to add my two cents. I work for an Army National Guard Public Affairs Detachment and have worked in Army Public Affairs for the last 12 years, including active duty. Any discussion of Public Affairs Officers engaging the public makes me laugh. Just my opinion from the cheap seats, but when we can’t even access social media websites. What are the options? How will web managers do it? Until access to social media tools are allowed across the board. Its a moot question.
The idea of PA officers treating the citizen as a customer strikes me odd as well. Army PA officers are responsive to their boss, not the public. The public is something to inform, not engage. I’m not trying to be sarcastic or bitter. This is something I have witnessed for over a decade.
PA already focuses on the press/message. And the IO landscape has blurred the lines of between what used to be informing the public, and psyop campaigns to persuade the public. But that’s outside the realm of this discussion.
I’m sure its different in your neck of the woods. I don’t get to see the nice view from the crystal palaces that PA Officers reside. I’m just down here in the weeds, and where we are for (Army) PA overall, and web-management in particular, doesn’t really fit into the the picture painted in your questions.
(I know, this doesn’t help your discussion. I just felt I needed to vent a little).
