Martha Garvey replied to the topic When Should An Organization Abandon Social Media? in the forum Communications, Citizen Engagement, Customer Service 7 years, 11 months ago

Well, not to sound wishy-washy, but: it depends.

As far as podcasts go, I’d leave it be, because you never know when it’s going to be useful to somebody in the future. Some organizations in the arts, for example, consider podcasts a way of teaching and reaching out to people who can’t get to see the work firsthand–see the American Theatre…[Read more]

The National Archives has been working a lot with Foursquare to publicize presidential libraries. I don’t have the link to the presentation handy, but when I find it, I will pass it along.

Also, American Express sponsored a “think local” hackathon in NYC a few months ago, primarily for small businesses–but you could totally see how this could…[Read more]

Emily, please keep me in the loop. While I have no CIO’s in my family, I do have a sister who works for Montgomery County, and I am very interested in the challenges of county government.

Martha Garvey replied to the topic When did you first hear about the internet? in the forum Technology 8 years, 9 months ago

1981. I worked at Carnegie Mellon University as a very young writer-editor. I wrote and edited my copy in something called Word11, had to walk up a half a building to get to a printer. I got to work around people who were developing artificially intelligent robots, painters who were making their paintings…slowly…from programs on massive…[Read more]

It’s tricky, for sure. All the tools you mention…Twitter, Quora, etc., can serve as research tools. Also, the agency I support actually has LinkedIn groups to serve their communities.

What’s also interesting/problematic is not assuming people have access to all of these tools during the day. The wired vs. the unwired: very problematic.

Martha Garvey replied to the topic What If NTSB Gets a Ban on Cell Phones for Drivers? in the forum Mobility for Government 9 years, 1 month ago

Listen, it isn’t just car vs. car. It’s car versus pedestrian. Typically, a pedestrian with a small child or an old dog.

I can think of at least three occasions where I have been *walking* with my dog, and I have seen a driver making a turn, bearing down on me while on a cell phone or texting. Not seeing me at all. I can run fast, but my dog…[Read more]

Martha Garvey replied to the topic Do you have business cards? in the forum Miscellaneous 9 years, 6 months ago

I am a contractor, and also a freelance writer. I have a few different flavors of business cards, including a moo.com card, as well as cards with my book’s logo on them. And I needed cards twice yesterday–once for a company fair, complete with giveaways (The Latin Grammys!) and once for a tech meetup–and yes, geeks are still using cards.…[Read more]

I agree there are issues that are not “Meetup”-ready, and the danger of looking like a lobby is unquestionably there. But I think engaged government folks sometimes add so much to the mix–and dispel the myths of slacker/behind the times gov folks. As a contractor, I sometimes find myself a little frustrated by non-govies’ understanding of government.

I think it’s a great idea. At least in my city (New York), there already is some gov-ing up of existing Meetups.

Data.gov made a big appearance at a Semantic Web Meetup in New York a while ago.

I had lots of teachers who inspired me. My American history teacher in high school, Harry Hont, looked like Rasputin but taught like an angel. Under his watch, I wrote papers about the causes of the Civil War, the history of ragtime, and the development of the American public school system. He turned a group of students into a group of history…[Read more]
