Molly Moran replied to the topic Why Aren’t Feds Teleworking… It’s Not Cause They Can’t in the forum Human Resources 7 years, 5 months ago

A few years ago I worked in an office that allowed and encouraged employees to telework one day a week. I often “skipped” my telework day, however, and came into the office anyway, because I found the technology too frustrating. It wasn’t the technology of meetings that was the problem (I found phone conferences to be adequate) but the…[Read more]

Molly Moran replied to the topic The Amount of Data Created Every Minute in the forum Technology 7 years, 5 months ago

I wonder if that has to do with the data source. For example, it’s pretty easy to get solid numbers on how many hours’ worth of video are uploaded to YouTube each minute, because you’re measuring from just one point (YouTube). Online shopping happens at gazillions of sites. How did they get that number? Is it an estimate from some government…[Read more]

Molly Moran replied to the topic On Muffins and Mind Readers: Have Government Events Gone Wild? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 7 years, 8 months ago

Regarding the DOE example: most likely the contractors’ companies paid for their meals. I have seen that at State Department events before. Those companies are allowed to do that, and of course the government is not allowed to pay for their employees’ food (unless of course we’re talking M&IE).

Molly Moran replied to the topic The CDC’s “Zombie Comic”: How Can Other Agencies Grow Creativity Like This? in the forum Miscellaneous 8 years, 1 month ago

I did something similar (but on a much, much smaller scale) a few months ago. We needed to create a one-page handout for new employees that informed them of the most important things to know about IT security at State (in our office). We wanted to make sure it stood out from all the other handouts people get when they’re new. I’ve attached the…[Read more]

Molly Moran replied to the topic Suggestion for Web Stats software? in the forum Forum Discussions 8 years, 8 months ago

You could use Google Analytics. You’d have to send log files to the cloud, but no content. It’s reliable, but I do have some recommendations for best practices. I’m happy to chat more about it if you’d like.

    @22jzhncyllm5gHi Don,
Sorry, didn’t see your note about the Smart Leadership blog until just now. I built the site when I worked in eDiplomacy, and Leslie runs it. Now I’m just a fan/reader. She often has guest writers on the site, and I’m sure she’d love your participation.
Actually, I just found this on the home page of the site:
    “We welcome…[Read more]

Molly Moran replied to the topic Finding and Fostering the Kernels of Good Ideas in the forum Promoting Creativity 10 years, 6 months ago

At State, we’ve recently (Feb.) launched an intranet website for employees to submit their good ideas for how to improve the Department. Yes, we get complaints, but the form is set up to collect ideas, not complaints, and almost everyone includes some suggestion of how to fix the problem they identify. This site is modeled in large part on TSA’s…[Read more]

Molly Moran replied to the topic ugov.us site – scam? in the forum Forum Discussions 10 years, 6 months ago

Entirely possible that it’s an altruistic app. It just seemed strange to have one *just* for government sites. It made me think that someone is trying to collect government URLs. And maybe that would be for good reasons, maybe not. I wish that the “about” link worked. 🙂

Molly Moran started the topic ugov.us site – scam? in the forum Forum Discussions 10 years, 6 months ago

A colleague at State, Corey Martin, just pointed me to this site: http://ugov.us/ It claims to do “URL Shortening for .gov websites.”

He did a little background research and found that the site is registered to:
    Luis Rodriguez
    335 Village Creek Dr
    Webster, Texas

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it a scam?

Molly Moran replied to the topic What Does It Take to Be Creative? in the forum Promoting Creativity 10 years, 6 months ago

Anyone in this forum a government contractor? I suspect that we have a good resource for creativity in gov’t contractors, but I also suspect we put even more bureaucratic restrictions on these people than we do gov’t employees. At least I think that’s true in my case.

I just read the book “What Would Google Do” by Jeff Jarvis. Obviously, Google is an employer that values and fosters creativity from most of its employees. Apparently, they have “pods” that employees can go into to have absolute quiet space to think. I think that’s pretty funny, but I also wish we had one of those in my office!

Here’s some interesting advice from Berkun’s The Myths of Innovation:

“The secret to balancing work and play is thinking of the mind as a filter. Instead of binary switches — open vs. closed, creative vs. routine — we want a sliding scale of openness that we can control. If you want new ideas, you have to slide toward openness, turning some…[Read more]

One factor to creativity that might be obvious is license. People cannot be creative if they are/feel constrained. A good example is in Diplopedia: when our office first built it, we thought people would use it to write articles about things they know, such as where the good restaurants are near an embassy, or what such-and-such program does. Many…[Read more]

@009igip8812grMy work at State is focused on internal usages (usually to better Knowledge Management).
