Gitmo is bad – NSA is bad – waterboarding is bad – torture is bad – extraordinary renditions are ba…..wait – THEY’RE GOOD!!! Obama has proclaimed that the CIA can continue extraordinary renditions, but did it without any fanfare, notice and press coverage of this key provision.
In Executive Order – Ensuring Law Interrogations, a small provision preserves the CIA’s ability to detain and interrogate:
(g) The terms “detention facilities” and “detention facility” in section 4(a) of this order do not refer to facilities used only to hold people on a short-term, transitory basis.
What the neophytes also don’t understand is that rendition is not a tool of choice for the CIA. The high value detainees stay in CIA custody where we have control over their interrogation. Once rendered, we have little or no control and rarely get information or intelligence of value. Top-tier terrorists will never get released until we drain them of every single piece of intelligence.
So why did Obama sign this order? It’s pretty clear to me – he now has full access to the Daily Threat Matrix and to intelligence. I wonder if he lays awake at nighty, under the covers with a flashlight, waiting for the boogeyman now that he knows.
