Nathan Greenhut replied to the topic Request for No Power, No Cry – Can big analytics solve our infrastructure problem? in the forum Smarter Government: Analytics to Outcomes 8 years, 2 months ago
Seth, great response. Hopefully for a new bridge/tunnel they rethink that one at this point or figure out some other forms of effective transportation.
For the mapping of gas stations, I agree data is the best way to keep the lines balanced, but there also needs to be a backup system.
There should be a mix of solar, wind, gas, propane, etc. so…[Read more]

I am going to go see Lincoln this week and I am quite excited. The main reason I am excited is I think the qualities and abilities that Lincoln brought to the table during his presidency are needed more than ever in our government dealing with the fiscal cliff.
The description of the movie is below and I have done a bit of reading up on Lincoln…[Read more] -

After being stuck with no electricity for days (“Sleepless with no Electricity”), I started using analytics to see if I could come up with some ideas that would be revenue positive and help to solve the Big Infrastructure problem (Definition below). Below are my ideas at this point. Now, I need some Small or Big Data to support these ideas or…[Read more]

I agree with you that adding process steps and restrictions may not be the way to go. Do you think looking more closely at the transactional and external data to see if there are issues going on could work? Is there a way to do sampling, audits or risk scoring to see where more investigation needs to be done? This way we don’t add time or work…[Read more]

How do we prevent crimes and scandals in Government without spying on one another? Over the past few weeks, scandals (well below) have been uncovered across all different parts of government. I started to ask myself the following questions and would like to know others thoughts:

Smarter Government: Analytics to Outcomes 8 years, 10 months ago
Today there is a large challenge in government called the “data paradox”. Simply put, having too much data and not enough insight. There is a change happening today to become more “open”. This is a move from being only transparent with data to more of a sharing of data both internal and external to an agency. The link below is to an…[Read more]

Nathan Greenhut replied to the topic Do You Make A To-Do List Everyday? in the forum Acquisition, Contracting, Procurement 9 years, 4 months ago
I have a running to-do list that I prioritize and put estimated hours next to. For projects, I set aside that many hours a day. I think it is important to keep a to-do list, so you don’t lose track of things and make sure you spend the appropriate time on each task. The other benefit is when more projects or tasks come in, they are easy to…[Read more]

Nathan Greenhut replied to the topic Did you feel the earthquake? What did you do? in the forum Miscellaneous 9 years, 4 months ago
I heard the earthquake over the phone minutes before it hit, since I was on the phone with people close to the epicenter. I asked others if they felt it. Then it hit New Jersey. Then I started to wonder how often this happened and found out it was once every 40 years. I also found out that animals in the local zoo started acting strange…[Read more]

How do you feel about the use of predictive analytics? I have heard that inaccuracies in forecasting can cause huge swings in inventory in supply chains. Also, some of the best companies seem to be able to forecast the market, products, services and competitors better to achieve results. Do you think government can better forecast needs,…[Read more]

I think the right mix of “trusting your guts” and deliberate analysis are what it takes to achieve the best outcomes.
