Summer of 1979, I was hired as a GS-3 part-time temp to fill in for someone on maternity leave. I scored well on the civil service test, but the interviewer couldn’t seem to match any of my skills to the ones they needed. Finally, she asked, “Can you make coffee?” I never mastered the coffee machine, but learned the aspects of organization, administration, management and truly enjoyed public service. It’s been 30 years, I’ve climbed the career ladder, I’ve made a difference in many places, but still can’t make a decent cup of coffee!
