What Do You Think of When You Hear Civic Engagement?
Most people might say serving or being involved with the public. However, it is more involved than that. Civic Engagement is a systematic method to address public concerns through a variety of very well organized methods. While most civic engagement occurs at the local level (through special department of Civic Engagement), it is still an effective tool federal employees should learn to utilize.
Some might think that the customer service aspect overlaps with civic engagement. I would challenge that. Although customer service skills are greatly important and necessary to insuring a good working relationship with the public, it is not about building public awareness or “buy-in”.
What do you think of when you hear the words “Civic Engagement”? How has your agency used this tool effectively?
