The Sunlight Foundation reported that federal CIO Vivek Kundra is planning significant reductions in the federal government’s open data and open government efforts as a result of budget cuts. See Daniel Schuman’s article for more: http://sunlightfoundation.com/blog/2011/05/24/kundra-on-e-gov-cuts-no-project-unaffected/.
A budget reduction from $34 million to $8 million is huge, but aren’t some of the goals of these efforts to create efficiencies and thereby cut costs?
As an open government advocate, I’m concerned about the example this shows for cities, counties, and states that are trying to develop open government efforts.
Besides the obvious reduction in federal services, what do you see as the implications of these cuts?
