Despite the oxymoronic nature of traffic congestion in Maine, the Wiscasset Traveler Information System is a decent example of how corridor management can be effective in a rural environment.
Keep in mind that traffic congestion on Route 1 is caused almost exclusively by increases in traffic volume during summer months (tourism). The situation…[Read more]

The Needs to be Addressed:
One of the largest problems for North Dakota is the large truck traffic volumes in the oil producing counties & lack of infrastructure in rails and pipelines to transfer the mined products to the customers. This lack of “utility” infrastructure places most of the oil in truck to be delivered to the nearest train or pip…[Read more] -

Now that you’ve had an opportunity to work through two case studies using the corridor management process, it’s your turn to demonstrate how you think Corridor Management can be applied to your division.
Identify a location in your division that could benefit from Corridor Management. Â This could be a location where corridor management is curr…[Read more]

What other potential contributors to traffic issues exist?
One-way vs. two-way downtown streets and associated curb-side parking, sidewalks, and streetscaping. As part of its “Project 180” downtown revitalization, Oklahoma City eliminated most of its one-way streets downtown and revamped all the streets, on-street parking, and sidewalks thr…[Read more]

Nicholas – thanks for the comments. Interesting thought on the Corridor Performance Office to measure impact. We’ll discuss that more in the live discussion for Week 2

Angela,
Thank you for responding. Indeed, some of the responses do become duplicative given volume, but I like how you’ve expanded on some of the recommendations and provided your insight. It’s very valuable to share this type of information across divisions.
Good point on the ride sharing promotion. I live in this region, I too, don’t…[Read more]

1. People circling seeking a parking spot, incidents, non-essential trips on the roadway during the peak period.
2. Considering ATDM methods to manage speeds could be helpful. Providing DMS indicating parking availability downtown by block.
3. Initiate congestion pricing (parking pricing in the downtown area and variable/dynamic pricing on the…[Read more] -

I am behind in my response to this so it is difficult to avoid repeating suggestions. There are a lot of modes competing in the corridor. HOV, transit and vanpools all compete with metrorail service. However,
with full trains, that is not a real issue. I think they should consider increasing the occupancy inside the beltway again. They lost…[Read more] -

I am late to this conversation as I was in workshops all last week and catching up on work this week. Some ideas that may not have been touched on earlier:

I might be alone in this thought, but I’m just going to put it out there. The scope of these first 2 exercises might be a bit too big to tackle in a week. Honestly something as complex as this situation really warrants so much more than a 2 hour time frame to think through. So much detail is left out, and there are sooo many possible solutions,…[Read more]

The main problem probably isn’t the lack of parking or people knowing where the open spots are– it’s the lack of commuters taking transit downtown. The absence of quality park-and-rides and timely, affordable transit service might be the cause.
Frequent ramp spillbacks and “unre…[Read more]

There are not any parking programs in California that I know of that are priced dynamically enough to be considered part of an ICM strategy but it is an ATDM strategy that is used. The scenario discusses the “endless search” for parking by commuters, once they finally reach downtown. Kevin has mentioned that variable pricing can and should be a powerful tool to deploy to attempt a mode shift – could pricing be included in the parking locations to accomplish something similar? Are there other technological solutions (e.g.…[Read more]
