I think that the pressure to drink at lunch or at after-work functions is largely nonexistent anymore. I recall that until the late1990s you could have an adult drink at a business lunch (gasp!); now everyone overthinks everything and we are all terrified of being politically incorrect, so it is water, pop, iced tea, etc.

I take it strong and black, usually something from my Keurig. If you are dumping a ton of stuff into your coffee to make it drinkable, you actually love the additives, not necessarily the coffee!

Bryan Conway JD, PMP replied to the topic PMP – Is It Worth It? in the forum Program and Project Management 7 years, 10 months ago
I found it useful, it is an internationally recognized certification, and immediately opens doors to PM jobs. However, I am a federal government employee, so I was reimbursed for the certification, and my PDUs are provided at no cost to me, so I can’t speak to the monetary worth of it.
I have found that degrees/certifications appeal to those…[Read more]

Bryan Conway JD, PMP replied to the topic If Project Management is Common Sense, Then Why Do 70% of Projects Fail? in the forum Program and Project Management 8 years, 10 months ago
Almost any non-technical profession can be labeled as “common sense” at the surface level. Finance, accounting, contracting, management, education, etc., all have a large element of common sense. I can balance my own check book and do my own taxes, so why would I ever bother to major in finance or accounting? It’s all common…[Read more]

Daniel,
Admittedly, a portion of my thousands of project management hours that I documented to qualify to sit for the PMP were not necessarily spent engaging in “best practices”! But I would like to think there was continuous improvement that culminated in a stricter adherence to a PMBOK oriented doctrine of PM. I agree, Daniel, it comes from…[Read more] -

Among the “common sense” things that PMs do is assist with creating effective charters, complex WBSs, communication plans, building schedules in MS Project updated through PWA, building tasks with appropriate constraints/predecessor-successor relationships/lead-lag-slack, understanding and interpreting the critical path, understanding and…[Read more]

Bryan Conway JD, PMP replied to the topic When did you first hear about the internet? in the forum Technology 8 years, 10 months ago
Taking a look at the article, AOL still has 3.5 million “dial-up” users, which I believe is the only chargeable service that AOL still has (it has been free to users who already have a broadband connection for several years). It seems like on dial-up you would have to go to a mobile website to get any sort of performance at all, and even then,…[Read more]

Bryan Conway JD, PMP replied to the topic Are Co-Workers Making You Fat? in the forum Human Resources 8 years, 10 months ago
Using peer pressure as an excuse for doing something negative didn’t fly with my parents when I was 7, and it certainly doesn’t influence me as an adult! I can’t believe that a person would respond to efforts to undermine healthy habits. I would minimize my social interactions with these people.

Bryan Conway JD, PMP replied to the topic Out Of Office Alerts Are Killing Telework Teleworking in the forum Human Resources 8 years, 10 months ago
This is a tricky one! I like for onsite people to know I’m out of the office, so they won’t waste their time trying to visit me in person or expect my attendance at a last minute meeting. If I don’t immediately respond to an email (if I’m currently in a teleconference, at lunch, etc.), not knowing that I’m out of the office could inconvenience…[Read more]

Jaime,
I don’t think it is necessarily a problem of “missing the point of EVM at the project manager/scheduler level. The issue is about effectively communicating results to the senior executive sponsors and customers, most of whom have very little PM knowledge.
The data must be delivered in a common format, which is the “red/yellow/green” tiered…[Read more] - Load More
