Sandy Ressler replied to the topic When did you first hear about the internet? in the forum Technology 8 years, 10 months ago

Around 1977 or 78 I found out about the “ARPAnet” while at Rutgers, didn’t really understand what it was or use it but some computer science friends were starting to send email (which I sorta new about but didn’t have anyone to talk to). Then I also saw around 1978 or 79 an ftp session where I specifically remember my friend logging into a…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic How Can We Help Congress Have a Better Perception of Federal Employees? in the forum Human Resources 8 years, 11 months ago

I don’t really believe Congress (with the possible exception of all those new tea party types) has such a negative opinion, we are simply very convenient whipping boys (and girls). The administration and all the executive branches in general do a horrible job illustrating the great work some do. It’s not an easy job celebrating people who…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic Matrix management in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 10 years, 6 months ago

I’ve seen a number of different matrix management projects. With one significant exception, (I’ll elaborate), they generally fail. The idea is that you have one set of managers that controls people and another set of managers that control money. The managers controlling the money would typically run a particular project and they negotiate with the…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic Saturday Night Live’s “Public Employee of the Year” Awards in the forum Acquisition, Contracting, Procurement 10 years, 9 months ago

Yawn…a few moments of humor at best. What I find somewhat ironic is that all of the actors and writers of the show are members of their own “powerful” unions. The Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America or others. I’d like to hear about their “silly” union rules.

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic What Do You Think about OMB Soc Media and PRA Guidance? in the forum Forum Discussions 10 years, 9 months ago

Not really complaining (ok maybe a little 😉 but you make good points. Simply managing to get this “guidance” out of the bowels of OMB is an accomplishment and should be applauded. Now some English please.

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic What Do You Think about OMB Soc Media and PRA Guidance? in the forum Forum Discussions 10 years, 9 months ago

Documents like these drive me nuts! While no doubt well intentioned it is totally incomprehensible and will do little to speed the adoption of social media because the people wishing to use the tools will have to get the advise of agency legal counsel to interpret the memo. Now I understand that documents such as these are effectively legal…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic jQuery vs. Flash in the forum Forum Discussions 10 years, 10 months ago

Totally an apple’s versus oranges comparison. jQuery is a javascript library which you can use to create dynamic web sites. Flash is a proprietary Adobe product you can use to create dynamic web sites …see the difference! 😉 Actually Flash is wonderful for creating extremely interactive content, however IMHO it will be subsumed by the…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic What makes for a good panel moderator? in the forum Leadership, Management, Supervision 10 years, 10 months ago

    Timekeeper, timekeeper, timekeeper
Panelists often have a tendency to drone on and on and there is nothing worse then a panelist who dominates the rest of the participants. Come prepared with a friendly, red card, or a little white flag…something you can wave to (in a friendly way) make the strong point that time is up. If they resist, just cut…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic Gov 2.0/Social Media – There Are No Experts in the forum Forum Discussions 11 years, 11 months ago

Totally disagree. There are experts, much of social media and “networking” has been around for a long time. There is a right and wrong way to send email versus spam. There are “best practices” that should be examined and learned by those running social media sites. There are good and bad ways to use Twitter and Facebook and all the rest. Openness…[Read more]

Sandy Ressler replied to the topic Risk Taking versus Risk Aversion in the forum Forum Discussions 12 years, 1 month ago

Sure I’m willing to be bold and willing to ask for forgiveness rather than permission, and have done this many times over the years that’s not the problem. Sometimes one must get mgmt approval and I’d like to find a more systematic way to give them “cover” so they don’t feel the need to be to ultra risk averse.
