Scott Thomas started the topic GSA Scandal Lessons Learned: Do 1 Thing Every Week to Improve the Federal Workforce Image in the forum Young Government Leaders LA 7 years, 5 months ago
I think my jaw literally dropped when I read about the recent GSA scandal. What in the world were they thinking? Just this morning I paid $1 for a crappy cup of coffee at a training facility because it would be irresonsible to let tax payers (and that’s you and me!) pay for my caffeine addiction. And this is just how it works; as a federal worker I don’t get Vegas trips with clowns, I get $1 coffee. I don’t get mind readers and sushi during my training class, I get sub-par sandwiches for $10. I signed up for this and I’m honored to uphold the integrity that taxpayers rely on. I’m still trying to figure out why they thought they wouldn’t get caught?
Unfortunately this scandal is a black-eye for the image of Government workers. I understand it’s easy for Government workers to sit still and shake their head at this news story since we all know the strict rules and approvals we must follow when it comes to spending every penny in our budgets. But let’s recognize that this news story is another knock on all Government workers, not just those involved in this scandal (seriously, clowns in Vegas?). I often forget the current public negative perception of Government employees – just last week I came home from work well past normal duty hours and a friend innocently asked “you worked late? I thought you worked for the Government?”
Instead of sitting back with your jaw dropped like me, try to do 1 thing every week to improve the image of Government workers. This could be as easy as explaining the rules Government workers must follow when your friends bring up this GSA scandal or posting a relevant article (from Govloop?) on Facebook. This is America, we work hard for a reason!
What other ideas do you have for improving the image of Government workers? What have you done that’s been effective? What do your friends think about Government employees?
