Meet the Gov Mascot: #8 – Thermy the Thermometer

It’s Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) and GovLoop is teaming up with the Partnership for Public Service to promote PSRW by running a special series called “Meet the Government Mascot.” Each day we’ve been introducing you to a new mascot, then we’ll run a contest on May 6-8 where you can vote for your favorite.

If you’ve ever gotten food poisoning then do I have a government mascot for you. Seriously though that exactly what Thermy the mascot for the Food Safety and Inspection Service tries to prevent, among other things.

Thermy is, yeah you guessed, a thermometer who was designed educate people on when it’s safe to eat food or when it needs to be cooked more. Thermy’s “It’s safe to to Bite When the Temperature is Right!” campaign was launched to promote the use of food thermometers.

Thermy actually has some pretty shocking facts about why you should use food thermometers. For instance one out of every four burgers turns brown on the inside before it actually safely cooked.

While Thermy isn’t as well known as some of the other mascots, he isn’t a slouch at all. He was featured in the 2000 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

Nobody wants to get sick from food so it’s probably a good idea to follow Thermy’s advice and maybe even vote for him in our mascot poll.
