The Technology Behind the Court System

One challenge that government is facing is how to best improve services for citizens and reduce costs, decrease spending and lower taxes. Technology is seen as one solution to make government more efficient in how it delivers services and interacts with citizens.

To often government agencies are pressed to provide improved services and information in a cost effective manner, when the proper technological infrastructures are not available to the agency. Some agencies are stuck with old IT infrastructures that do not provide an enterprise-wide view of an agency. Leaders at all levels of government have looked to leverage current technology to improve how they are delivering information and services.

One area that I find interesting is how our judicial system can use technology to build safer communities and improve efficiencies in how the courts prosecute, convict, incarcerate and work to rehabilitate citizens. There are many applications that can be used to help streamline the judicial process. Using technology to help manage cases, records management, scheduling, juror selection – all are important factors to efficiently moving a case through the court system.

The judicial system is in desperate need of becoming more efficient, and technology is one courts can become leaner. Technology can help many of those in the court system become more efficient. There are so many resources that the courts need to manage, everything from scheduling to discovery, proceedings, hearings, transportation and financial management.

If you’d like some more information, Oracle has an interesting interactive graphic on their website Information-Age Applications for Justice and Public Safety. They walk through all the different types of data and resources that need to be managed in the court system, and once you see all the different touch points, it becomes clear that an organizational wide tech solution is needed for the courts.

Oracle offers an optimized and fully integrated stack of business hardware and software systems that helps organizations overcome complexity and unleash innovation.. Check out their Optimize with Oracle group on GovLoop as well as the Technology Sub-Community of which they are a council member.
