The Paralyzed Veterans of America recently wrapped up their annual wheelchair sports event—the 32ndNational Veterans Wheelchair Games, which HP attended as a proud sponsor. The event was held in Richmond, Va., and included more than 500 athletes competing in a variety of sports. The event was made even more special because it was considered a homecoming, since the games were first held in Richmond 31 years ago.
This year, HP attended the event as a Platinum Host Sponsor, making it the 14th year that HP has been a sponsor for the event. HP was also a sponsor of Kids Day— which provided physically disabled children in the Richmond area the opportunity to be mentored by veterans competing in the games. The children were taught important life lessons and how to live an active lifestyle. Katie Bowen was volunteering for the 2ndtime at Kids Day and said she couldn’t wait to get back and do it again:
The event was put on with the help of sponsors like HP and over 3,000 volunteers—assisting with all aspects of the event to ensure a great time for everyone involved. Some of the games included in the competition were swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, archery, air guns, basketball, nine ball, softball, quad rugby, bowling, hand-cycling, wheelchair slalom, sled hockey, power soccer, motor rally, track and field and trapshooting.
While the winners celebrated their victories, it was the spirit of the event that made it special for everyone involved as the games came to a close. Fans and participants alike celebrated the ending of another great year for the Wheelchair Games—another opportunity to cheer for the participants and raise awareness for veterans, in what better place, than where the games originally began.
