Australian state agency pulls the plug on real-time data feed

During its two-week debut, a mobile application showing real-time locations for Sydney Buses (NSW) received more than 200,000 views. The app used data from the New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority, released for in February for an “app day.” Unfortunately for developer Ben Hosken, the RTA decided to withdraw its public data feed, and his app was dead. Instead, Sydney Buses moved to a text-messaging system to provide commuter alerts, which was introduced for a six-month trial on selected routes. “The system is not yet able to provide a reliable or sustainable feed,” a government spokesman told The Sydney Morning Herald last week about the decision to cancel the live GPS feed.
