A report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office says that federal agencies have not fully addressed concerns about using social media in three areas: privacy, security, and records management. ”The use of these services can pose challenges in managing and identifying records, protecting personal information, and ensuring the security of federal information and systems,” the report said, and noted that some of the 23 agencies reviewed already had policies in place to address these challenges. In addition to agency-specific recommendations, the GAO called upon the National Archives and Records Administration to document best practices and to develop guidance on effectively capturing records from social media sites.
