Hackschooling

Many of you may have already seen this talk by Logan Laplante. In my opinion he nails the age old question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. When you think about it, his answer makes perfect sense but I’m pretty sure that none of us answered it with his response when asked. Most of us probably said doctor, lawyer, fireman, policeman, etc. His answer – HAPPY.

Oh, by the way, did I mention that Logan is 13. Logan uses the teaching of Dr. Roger Walsh who’s research focuses on how to be happy and healthy. The focus is on these 8 things; exercise, diet & nutrition, time in nature, contribution & service, relationships, recreation, relaxation & stress management, religious & spiritual. Dr. Walsh says that “Much of education is oriented, for better or worse, towards making a living rather than making a life.” We don’t learn how to be happy in school, it’s just assumed that we will be, but as we all know that is not always the case.

Logan is home schooled and calls his education “Hackschooling”, which combines a creative hacker mindset, experimental classes and camps, the 8 happy and healthy TLC’s and online resources. By learning in a way that worked for him and being motivated and interested in doing something he found that he could do a lot in a short amount of time.

The short video left me thinking and asking questions of myself and my own work. That’s what I really liked about it. What can I do to hack my work? How can this type of different approach be used in the workplace? Application moving forward for Destination 2020?

What are your thoughts? I’d be interested in hearing what types of hacks you use in your workplace.
