What led you to join the public sector workforce?

It seems like half of the "opportunities" out there are unpaid internships. I'm not sure about most people, but to me, at the point that student loans start coming in unpaid internships are of little…Continue

So long and thanks for all the fish!

Posted on July 6, 2012 at 3:00pm 3 Comments

Today is my last day as a GovLoop fellow; it's been awesome, and I'm hoping to stay active in the GovLoop community.

I've learned much about marketing analytics during my time here and have significantly improved my writing skills. The opportunity to help write the social media section of the Communications Guide and writing the Federal Buzz for the Washington Post have been among my favorite parts of the fellowship. Also, meeting those in and around government, as well as my…

Do TV Sitcoms give Public Servants a Bad Rap?

Posted on July 3, 2012 at 12:30pm 16 Comments

Lately I've become obsessed with the show Parks and Recreation. I think it's hysterical -- and maybe part of that is because I work around government, and can relate the characters to people I've met. But it does make me wonder, is the show reinforcing negative stereotypes about government? For example:

1) Leslie Knope is a bright eyed bureaucrat, trying extraordinarily hard to make positive change for the City of Pawnee. However, she's discovered the pitfalls of endless…

GovBytes: Social Media a Major Campaign Tool for Political Candidates

Posted on July 2, 2012 at 11:00am 4 Comments

Social media has become a major influencer in the way candidates campaign. Newark's Cory Booker has over one million followers, and is one of the best examples of a politician successfully utilizing social media. On New Years Eve in 2010, Mayor Booker even responded to a grandson tweeting about his grandfather who needed his driveway shoveled. Booker tweeted "I will do it myself; where does he live?" And shovel Booker did, with a handful of other volunteers.

SINET helps address cybersecurity by increasing collaboration

Cybersecurity is a big deal, especially after the revelations of the role of the United States behind Stuxnet and the Flame virus. We've learned that cyber-infrastructure isn't particularly well protected, and the Security Innovation Network (SINET) is looking to change that through collaboration. Robert Rodriguez of SINET spoke with Chris Dorobek of the…

Thank you Corey. I was a bit nervous getting started here. I've been in NYC since becoming a Federal employee and the majority of potential network professionals for public affairs professionals here have largely appeared to have bureaucratic malaise overall; many feeling no need to expand or learn. So my goal of getting to know more government communications professionals has been hard to achieve. When a close contemporary and friend at DOD mentioned GovLoop I was caught my attention quickly. Thank you for the suggestions and I’ll definitely explore the links you suggested.
