Government agencies are embracing artificial intelligence tools, in varying degrees, to enhance efficiency and performance and reduce costs. But however advanced their AI journey is, agencies are confronting a problem: an emerging AI skills gap. Some organizations are prioritizing IT staff — an understandable decision, on the surface, at least — but that delays adoption by the broader workforce. And pilot programs often move too slowly and involve too few people.
Personalized AI training can help all employees become AI-fluent. Learning paths tailored to specific roles teach people how to incorporate AI in their individual workflows. The skills gap closes further when the courses are interactive — when employees can ask the training program questions and respond to agency-specific scenarios.
“It behooves government [agencies], while they’re piloting and being careful around implementation, to think through a broader lens through which all workers can have access to [AI], because you want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to be as productive as possible with this technology,” said Jonathan Hasak, Coursera’s Senior Partnerships Lead for AI & Government.
In this video interview, Hasak and his colleague, Aaron Hunter, Coursera Enterprise Account Manager, discuss how to overcome barriers to fostering an AI-knowledgeable workforce. Topics include:
- How agencies can use AI tools equitably and effectively
- The status of public-sector AI training around the country
- Specific ways to make agency employees more AI-fluent
