NASA’s LADEE Probe Enters Lunar Orbit

NASA’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer has started to orbit around the moon this week and has been protected from effects of the government shutdown, Space.com reports.

Miriam Kramer writes LADEE made three elliptical orbits around the Earth, then moved into a higher orbit after each lap around the planet.

The moon’s gravity took LADEE in after the probe performed a burn to transfer into lunar orbit, according to the report.

LADEE will perform two additional lunar orbit insertion maneuvers before a month-long checkout phase, while its next burn will occur Wednesday and a third on Saturday, Kramer reports.
