The Six-Pack Viewers Guide – Week 14 College Football – from Govloop’s Bureaucrat on Sports, the Hokie Guru

Wow… the college football season… almost over… but stay tuned for our college football bowl pick’em contest right here on Govloop!! This will tide you through the holiday season, until get get to college hoops…

Inclement Weather Policy Changes and Potential Salary Freeze

Let’s start, though, with some important government news… OPM has updated its inclement weather policy. And quite honestly, as a fed, I do not like these proposals of a five-year salary freeze, which would never happen in the private sector. Oh, and a 10% federal staff cut… on to sports… I won’t be talking about the Syracuse or Penn State incidents because I’m sure you’ve all heard about that… we’re gonna get to the good stuff here…

The streak… it’s over…

Miami will not have a first round NFL draft pick in several years… it was good while it lasted (a great run)… I’m sure Miami will be back under Al Golden…

Let’s get right to our picks this week… it’s conference championship week, after all!! In this post, our rankings by the teams will be based on the BCS since it’s late in the season… several of these have interesting story lines because you have games that are rematches… teams that want revenge… here we go!!

The Picks

1.) #23 West Virginia University (WVU) at University of South Florida (Tonight, December 1, 2011 at 8 PM EST on ESPN): Real talk… I’m Virginia Tech graduate, family was employed as professorial staff at Virginia Tech, I’m a season ticket-holder for Hokies football and men’s basketball… the ‘Neers were some of our most hated rivals back in the day. I want South Florida to win this game lol (Govloop’s wife is there after all), but I don’t think it will happen. The Couchies need to win this game so that they can get that Orange Bowl bid (Cincy will likely beat UConn and there would be a three-way tie… BCS standings would determine tie breaker). If Cincy beats UConn and WVU loses, Cincy will be in the Orange Bowl. The Burning Sofas simply have too much on offense for the Bulls. And the ‘Neers coach likes to sky dive!! The game will be close… we’ll call it a 31-23 win for WVU.

2.) Conference USA Championship Game (December 2, 2011 at 12 PM EST on ABC): #24 Southern Mississippi vs. #6 Houston In Case Keenum, Houston has the most prolific QB in the history of the NCAA. Drinking game statistic that the announcers will remind you about all game long? Southern Mississippi is Brett Favre’s alma mater. That won’t matter much in this game. Houston will win 48-21

3.) SEC Championship Game (December 2, 2011 at 4 PM EST on CBS): #1 LSU vs. #14 Georgia – LSU, hands down, is the best team in the country and I do not expect them to lose a game in December or January (yes, I’m picking the Tigers to defeat Alabama in the national title game). The Honey Badger!! LSU WINS!!

4.) Bedlam (December 2, 2011 at 8 PM EST on ABC): #9 Oklahoma at #3 Oklahoma State – One of the games I’ve wanted to watch all year long… I’m sorry that it’s in the same time slot as my Hokies because I expect this game to be a barn-burner. Many, many points will be scored in this game. For years, Oklahoma State has played little brother to Oklahoma (and sometimes, to Tulsa). Not this year. Under the leadership of Mike Gundy (“I’m a man, I’m 40” fame) and the money of T. Boone Pickens, Oklahoma State is now a national name in football. The Guru expects the newcomer to the scene, Oklahoma State, to be FIRED up for this game… Oklahoma State wins 41-34.

5.) ACC Championship Game (December 2, 2011 at 8 PM EST on ESPN): #5 Virginia Tech vs. #20 Clemson – Ahh, the rematch… the Hokies were gashed… absolute drilled in the teams first meeting on October 1, 2011 in Blacksburg. 22-3. Since then, both teams have gone in opposite directions. The Hokies also have this 6’5″ 254 lb QB in Logan Thomas. He seems to know his way around a football field (yes, he was also recruited as a tight end):

He can throw the ball, too:

The Hokies are not happy right now… not happy that they lost to Clemson the first time around… The Guru expects that to change… we’ll call it Virginia Tech 31 Clemson 17. Winner to the Orange Bowl.

6.) Big 10 Championship Game (December 2, 2011 at 8:17 PM EST on FOX): #15 Wisconsin vs. #13 Michigan State – Another rematch in what might have been one of the best games of the year… check the video below… if not the game of the year, the catch of the year…

That was Sparty’s moment in the Sun… Wisconsin’s Montee Ball (in the video below) will rain (or reign) on Sparty’s field… and the Badgers win 27-17.

Stay tuned this holiday season for our bowl picking contest at Govloop!!
