Difficulty is in the eye of the beholder. I have worked with all of these “types” (and have probably been considered to be each of them by one boss or the other). Finding the joy in working with each is my goal. […]

I agree entirely with Bob’s statement about not trying to use too much of SharePoint right away. At my agency we all go a SharePoint site collection allocated with the “advice” that “you can do ANYTHING with SharePoint.” But that is a guaranteed way not to anything well.
One of the most well-regarded SharePoint gurus in our area, Dux Raymond Sy,…[Read more]

@0imwojt0i9jxoCongratulations. Now you need to review those 13 dimensions in earnest. Good luck!
While I’m sure you already know this and don’t necessarily want to hear it, many of us took and passed the test multiple times before passing the goal of entering.

    Adam,
This is now my personal advice, not to be viewed as anything more than that, although I spent a year as an assessor back when the process was slightly different – the reason I reached out to my colleagues to answer your first question.
If your score on the written exam is sufficient for you to advance to the oral assessment, you will be…[Read more]

Adam Race, I just got this response from my colleagues in the office at State that handles the Foreign Service Oral Assessments:
“You will not be asked to provide a copy of your DD-214 until you reach the Oral Assessment stage. However, we hope you took the opportunity to mention your overseas military experience in the employment section when you…[Read more]

Sandra Yeaman replied to the topic Federal Manager Asks: How Do I Trust My Teleworking Employees? in the forum Human Resources 8 years, 5 months ago

I set up a Telework Diary list on SharePoint to record what I do each day. I am one of many teleworkers in my office, but only one of two staff members who telework exclusively. I hope our managers encourage others who telework to contribute to the Diary, a record of just what does get done when staff members are out of sight.

It’s that “I’ll just wait til he’s back in the office” comment that I worry about. I have been an on-premises staff member for three years, but I’m about to transition to working from the West Coast four days a week. I will be taking every opportunity to remind my colleagues that I am still around, even if they can’t see me. I hope to use…[Read more]

On May 7, at the Ronald Reagen building, the Excellence in Government Conference will include a FailFaire to focus on just that topic – that the government needs to recognize that great successes often happen only after a few failures. Speakers at the session, Driving Innovation in Risk-Averse Environments, include Richard Boly, Director of the…[Read more]

I’m a dozen years late in getting around to it, but I finally finished First, Break All the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently, by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman, summarizing the Gallup Organization’s 20-year effort to interview managers on what they do that makes them great. The paradoxes above dovetail nicely with the…[Read more]

    Khaled,

Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback on your updated resume. Your experience is very impressive indeed.

My assignment is to evaluate your resume against the guidelines of the Federalize Your Resume webinar. As that webinar emphasized that the language in your resume needs to match language from the vacancy announcement of…[Read more]

    Edward,

You have done a lot of good work to capture not just your duties, but your accomplishments. While it may look as though I made lots of suggestions or changes, that’s because I turned track changes on before making some editing adjustments. There are few true suggestions.

I used Word’s formatting features, mostly setting specific tab…[Read more]

Hmmmm. They recommended you remove the objectives section? Did they say why? It’s the absence of an objectives section that I have frequently advised be corrected.

Just joined. I received my MA in English with Specialization in Teaching English as a Foreign Language back in 1975. Teaching ESL was the first of my three major career chunks, followed by software engineering and then a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t won a contest on a San…[Read more]

Can you save your resume in .doc format and upload it again? My Mac interprets the .docx file as a zip file so I can’t open or save it.

    Alexa,

I’m working from home this week which makes it a bit more complicated to access resumes on GovLoop (or more correctly, I haven’t figured out how to do it outside my State account), so I’ll do what I can as quickly as I can, but it might take me until next week. Just so you know.
