Ask For What You Want

“The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.” – George Bernard Shaw

If you want to be promoted, you have to ask for it. But before you do, build a case for it and put it in writing. One thing I do is keep a weekly record of what I do.

By putting together a list of the jobs that you have been doing and the additional experience and skills you’ve obtained it will help you when you are up for your next job promotion.

Explain the financial impact of your work on the overall operations of the company and the contribution that you are making as a stellar employee. Then present this information in a presentation to your boss.

Action step: Keep a weekly journal of all the extra projects you have volunteered for. Do this for one month and then compile all the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities you have achieved. This will be great when you apply for your next federal job. It’s all about the KSAs.
