Responsibilities:

The City of Lawrence, Kansas is seeking to fill the position of Management Intern. Lawrence has a population of approximately 90,000, provides a vibrant cultural scene, and is home to the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University. The City of Lawrence is a full-service city with a budget of $167 million and over 800 full-time employees. The community is dynamic, with an active and civically engaged populace. Two universities, a thriving downtown, beautiful park and public facilities, and a renowned arts and music scene attract residents and visitors to Lawrence.

This position is a one year, full-time internship ideal for the university student who has completed the academic coursework required for a Master’s of Public Administration. The position will also provide exposure to other City departments through various special projects and assignments. Former interns have worked on projects such as the annual city budget, compensation and benefits survey, employee satisfaction survey, policy writing, bid evaluations, grant and award applications, bargaining unit negotiations, retirement plan enhancements, interview panels, performance measures, investigation of workplace issues, analysis of workers compensation data, development of risk allocation and stop loss programs, and presentations to City staff and the governing body. Interns have also served as members of the City’s Management Team, allowing them to work alongside department heads and other senior management.

The successful applicant will be motivated, self-initiating and able to take on new challenges with enthusiasm. This position is designed to develop the leadership and technical skills of the intern while providing the City with highly capable staff support. Former interns now serve in Lawrence and other cities in positions such as management analyst, finance analyst, assistant director of public works, budget manager, and assistant city manager.

Qualifications:

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration, business administration, political science or a related field. One or more years of prior part time work experience in an administrative or office setting is highly desirable. Prior work within a City organization preferred. This position is preferred for the second year, current Master’s of Public Administration degree student needing internship experience to complete their degree program. Must possess a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate must also pass a background check, post-offer City physical and drug screen.
