Is Iran Stirring The Pot?

US counter-terrorism officials say as the anticipation of a confrontation with Tehran over their nuclear program appears to be looming they believe that Iran is now providing “weapons and money” to various groups in an effort “to start as many bush fires as possible” with the goal of distracting the US and other regional allies.

Remember that, for decades Iran has been considered a sponsor of terrorism, and have long posed a security concern to the international community. In 2002, President George W. Bush labeled Tehran part of an axis of evil, which also included Iraq and North Korea, and in 2006, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, “Iran has been the country that has been in many ways a kind of central banker for terrorism.” They are known to have aided militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah in conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, and recently U.S. officials believe there have been indications that officials in the Iranian government aided the insurgency in Afghanistan, and have provided al-Qaeda operatives within their country with assistance, including logistical help, money and cars.

Additionally, not long ago, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Iran would support any nation that wanted to confront Israel saying: “I have no fear of saying that we will back and help any nation or group that wants to confront and fight against the Zionist regime (Israel).” His activists philosophy has publicly called for a wider Islamic realm, aspiring to export the Islamic Revolution to the entire Moslem world, calling for the annihilation of what he calls the “the root of all evil.” He calls the US “the Great Satan,” and its ally, Israel “the Little Satan.”

Consider that analysts believe that Iran will support any Islamic terror organizations operating against both the US and Israel, as well as against moderate Arab regimes. This threat is expected to continue, because their leadership has an uncompromising radical ideology and the regimes commitment to achieving nuclear and unconventional weapons capability, along with its stated goal of eradicating the State of Israel.
